Moving house. How long to keep cat inside?

We are moving tomorrow. Our cat has a litter tray but hardly ever uses it as he usually goes outside. We don't have a cat flap so our day consists of letting him out, letting him in 10 minutes later, letting him out, letting him in 20 minutes later...you get the picture. I know he's not going to be best pleased about being kept inside but I'm terrified of losing him. Also, we're only moving about half a mile away and I'm worried he'll try to make his way back to the old house. So how long until it's safe to let him out?

People will differ on this so really I would just see how it goes. No way would my cat stay indoors, I had to let him out after 30 mins in the new house!! Yowling and throwing himself st the door! Your cat sounds pretty needy so I'm sure it won't travel far. My cat watched us from under the new hedge in the garden for a few hours and then was in asking for food

I would say at least 2 weeks myself. That's what the rescue told me when I got PestoCat2 in September.
