Is Stronghold the same as Frontline?

We normally use prescription Advocate on the dog and Frontline the cats. We have fleas. The cats are a bit wild and black so dunno if they actually have fleas on them. The dog does for sure.

Ive Indorexed the house.

Dog still has big brown fleas crawling on her. Dog is at the vets today being spayed and while she was being checked in I was catching and crushing fleas. Vet nurse was Hmm but as I pointed out they seem to be selling me stuff which isn't working so don't blame me!

I wonder if the shitty Frontline may be the problem and vet nurse agreed and said I could have either Stronghold or Advocate for the cats. Ive just googled and I think Stronghold is the same as Advantage which ive had before and I swear I heard it's the same as Frontline as well.

The dog is going to have the new flea tablet thing. What do I get for the cats? Stronghold or advocate?

Don't know but watching with interest as I'm pretty sure Frontline isn't working well on my cat either! In fact I know it isn't as I was combing fleas out of her yesterday!

Frontline doesn't work any more.

FatCat and SoupDogg both have Advocate and it seems to do the job. Whilst they both scratch sometimes I've never seen any evidence of a flea infestation, unlike when they were on Frontline [shudder]

SoupDogg also has a Seresto (I think) collar which protects him against ticks in the summer.

Frontline is shite.

We had advocate for a while but it made our cat ill - switched to stronghold and she seemed Ok on that. Both worked well against fleas.

Do not treat your house, it is pointless - just treat the animals. That will sort it.

Frontline is useless now - Ddog 1 & 2 were covered in fleas despite being regularly treated. I use advocate now and haven't had any problems

In fact I'm astounded that people are still using frontline. Those selling it must be aware that it is long regarded as ineffective. Flease are resistant to the fipronil in it - so generic fipronil products are also useless.

Don't buy it. Every vet I've spoken to in the last 5 years has said the same.

Frontline hasn't worked in 10 years for us. We moved to Stronghold back then, and more recently to Advocate and never have a problem

Gudron - when I tried to get a refund, the manufacturers stated that there is no evidence of flea resistance to fiprinol and blame user error.

Ive just looked in the cupboard and think the cats actually had Advantage last time. Must admit I try and save some money by giving them non prescription stuff. Ive been caught out before by buying I think Effipro, and then finding out the ingredients are the same as Frontline.

And when you google Stronghold a lot of the links take you to Advantage product, so I started thinking they're the same!

But one website ive found Stronghold and Advantage and the Stringhold You need a prescription for so im hoping that's stronger.

Poor dd has flea bites now! Dh is worried when the central heating comes on that lots of eggs will hatch and it'll be worse.

Think I'll get whatever is cheaper out of Stronghold and Advocate then. If they're both prescription only they should both work!

Cmot, why did you move from Stronghold to Advocate?

I am worried that Advocate doesn't seem to be working on the dog.....but it could it just be fleas from the cats going to the dog??

Oh and with the cat Advocate do they need to be done monthly?

Dog flea stuff costs me a fortune. It's £32 for a pack of three and you have to do it every month.

Yes monthly. I know - part of the reason I no longer have a cat. Too expensive.

We changed when we moved areas, and Advocate was recommended as dealing with fox ticks, and as we have very outdoor cats as well as 2 dogs it seemed a good move.

Vet has given me a tablet for the dog. I got Stronghold for the cats though suprisingly the vet nurse doesn't reckon they have fleas. Had to take them in to be checked as they haven't been for seven years! Nurse flea combed them and couldn't find any evidence of fleas!

Frontline -Fipronil
Stronghold -selamectin
Advocate - moxidectin/imido
Advantage - moxidectin

Advocate - does not and has never been effective against any tick, not has stronghold.

Remember no product kills live fleas instantly and has ongoing effect. You can have either instant kill or ongoing effect, but not both.
For dogs Bravecto has the fastest flea kill of any product in the market and then lasts three months for fleas and ticks.

If you keep seeing live fleas on the dog I would check the garden for hedgehogs or rats.

Next door have hedgehogs in the garden, they have little houses for them.
