Exploring outside

When can I introduce kitten to outside? She only arrived yesterday, so it's a very new world. She is 10 weeks old.

You should definitely wait until she has had her vaccinations and I would not risk leaving her outside unattended until she has been neutered either.

It's also a good idea to leave it about three weeks until she has settled in.

I have a three year old new arrival here who is very keen to explore outside too!

I was thinking of getting a lead, which might be entertaining.

Not unless she's had her vaccinations.

Bogburglar99 · 30/08/2015 20:12

We've been recommended with Bogbastardkitten not until he has had his feline leukaemia jab and the unkindest cut of all, both of which are suggested for 6 months (although I think you can neuter much younger?) He is sitting yearningly by the windows and doors Smile

I'd be interested in any tips for providing limited access to the outdoors while they get used to it, without buying yards of hideously expensive fencing!

Thanks for the info. Will wait for jabs, to be safe.

Our cat had supervised outings into the back yard with DH - no lead, just DH keeping an eye on him & showing him where to go. I think this was after vaccs but before neutering. 2 years ago now so my memory is hazy!

Keep them in until at least 6 months of age and preferably older as kittens are pretty clueless outside. Needs to be neutered or will likely wander off and get run over and have had full vaccines, up to date with worming and flea prevention.

Minimammoth · 02/09/2015 13:20

Thanks for the advice. She has had her first jab today. Did not like the car journey, but is fine and bouncy now. And yes I can see that she would not manage on her own outside, there are buzzards!

After all vaccinations and neutering. Then you can go with them outside for first time.

My kitten is 9 weeks old and don't like the outside but only under supervision. I think she is going to be an indoor cat.
