Outdoor litter tray - advice appreciated

I'm a big cat-lover but for various reasons it has not been practical for me to have a cat for a few years. Now it seems like it might be the right time. However, when I was discussing logistics with my DH it transpires that he envisions having the litter tray outdoors, since we live in a relatively small space and he is worried about the smell. My question is - is this realistic? We would be able to have the litter tray right next to the back door (with catflap) and could construct some kind of wooden shelter for it. But of te cat gets used to going outside are they going to just go anywhere? If it's cold or rainy will they have a sneaky wee indoors? Does anyone have any experience of this arrangement? Thanks!

Why not just have it indoors, use a covered tray with odour-eliminating litter (which you can change regularly) and bag each poo (and deposit in outdoor wheelie bin?

That's what we do with our two. Am always asking people (who'd tell us the truth like my DM and MIL Grin) if they can smell anything; answer's always 'no'.

We had an outdoor tray, with a lid and everlasting litter....you just had to pick the the poo and rinse the gravelly litter....it was in a double layer tray, so like a colander and drip tray

they did not like it.

So we have normal litter trays, and change every day and pick the poo as it is produced.
