weepy eye

Hello,

My two year old cat has one weepy eye. She is keeping it half closed and there is quite a lot of clear discharge. The eye is not red or inflamed in anyway and she opens it fully when I pick her up. Has been like this for two days.

Do I take her to vet? If it's not necessary I would prefer not to as she is a very shy cat who finds the vets somewhat traumatic! If the vet prescribes drops there is no way we would be able to administer ourselves as she is so nervy. Just don't know whether this is some grit in her eye that will come out naturally or something worse!

I'm afraid that I would always vet a cat if there were eye issues. Eyes can go West fairly quickly so I don't take chances. (My vet will also fit any of the cats in that day if I mention 'eyes' when phoning.) It might be not much at all but eyes are one of my better safe than sorry areas so after two days....?

In humans, eyes are one of the dominant areas for recovery as well. I don't know if any research has been done in that area for other animals - eg cats not being entirely easy research subjects to work with - but I think I'd have her down nonetheless after this length of time.

In the interim, Lone once recommended bathing/wiping with cold tea to help with eye problems. (Something to do with the tannin being anti-inflammatory.) I don't think it matters what you use as a wipe as long as it's soft, clean and doesn't leave lint/bits behind.

Thanks cozie, have booked an appt for 5 today. Tried wiping last night but she is so nervous she just ran off and hid behind the sofa :(

My arms are covered in battle wounds just from trying to do her spot on flea treatment each month! She came to us from cats protection after being dumped and was stick thin and covered in scabs. I suspect that it may not just have been neglect going by her behaviour bless her :(

Just conjunctivitis. He checked for any scratches and there were none thankfully :)

Well done for getting her up there. It was the responsible thng to do I think.

When is the first application due to take place? (If it hasn't been attempted already.)

So glad we went now :) she doesn't seem to traumatised, just caught a fly! The vet did the first application so we will have to tackle it tomorrow morning. Twice a day for a week Can't wait for her to get better :) thanks for all your advice cozie!

Maybe I should mention that when Seniorboy came to me, he was vet phobic and hadn't been near the vet for most of his life. As he's been more often now, he's very very much improved - I think because he comes home afterwards. (That's only surmising on my part.) Maybe she's starting to realize that her home is her home now?

We're currently doing drops for a blocked tear duct in our big bruiser cat. We have to do 8 times a day!!!

One of us holds him in our arms, and holds his scruff, while the other quickly does the drops. We immediately follow up with a dreamie. After the first couple he cottoned on that it meant dreamie time, so he's not too bothered now so long as we're quick

I was just about to post the same advise as curls
One of my boys is having drops twice daily as he has a scratched cornea - we follow the treatment with dreamies and after the first day he's been as good as gold provided we are quick and decisive.
The funny thing is that my other cats have cottoned on and while he gets treated the others all line up ready for a treat.

Sometimes, I really wish Seniorboy enjoyed Dreamies - he doesn't like them so I haven't got them in my arsenal.

I have one girl who doesn't like Dreamies, the rest of the gang will take your finger off trying to grab them.

Thanks for the advice ladies :) Didnt go great this morning. Managed to get it in but was pretty traumatic for all involved :( tried wrapping her in a blanket but she wiggled out. Gave her some turkey after so hopefully the bribery will start to work!

night, you've cursed me! After boasting about our eye drop prowess the cat swiped both DH and I tonight during operation eye drop.
He then had the nerve to scream for his Dreamies.
