How to groom a reluctant cat?

Our puss is pretty elderly and stiff and has trouble getting round to the end of her back and the tops of her back legs. Her fur there is getting full of mats and the vet says we should groom her. But she hates it. I get nowhere with the usual metal-toothed cat comb. I've sacrificed one of my hair brushes and can manage to groom her for a bit longer with that, but not enough. Does anyone have any good tips for technique or for a good grooming implement?
