Ophie is not well.

Just dashed her to the vets having found her with foamy drool pouring from her mouth. Vet couldn't see anything in her mouth but said she may have a bit of grass in her soft palate or she may have licked a toad...so it's a watch overnight and see if she improves or not.

Now I KNOW we have frogs in the garden because she catches them and brings them in. I don't THINK we have toads, but then again I guess there could be some under the shed..we have a small pond so I guess it's possible?.

Ophie is next to me drooling and breathing a bit fast and very sorry for herself :( Luckily she doesn't go out of the garden so I know it won't be poisonous flowers as I only grow cat safe ones.

Fibgers crossed pleased that it's toad licking and nothing worse!

How is she doing? you must have been so worried seeing her like that.

I think she is going to be ok. She hasn't eaten all day but finally had a bit at 8pm and hasn't thrown up (yet). Still drooling a bit but less frothy and she has rolled and snuggled next to me..her breathing has settled (she had a bad nasal flare earlier).

I'm guessing she investigated a toad! I shall keep an eye on her overnight though!

Toad ? WTF ? Can they become ill licking a toad ???

Ive just this minute returned from the vet, had to leave my pregnant Peaches there
It never occurred to me she may have licked a toad, but yesterday there was lots of screaming and laughter in the garden, and the children ran in telling me about a "frog" in the garden.

Peaches had rapid breathing, a temperature, and her head is twitching. Both the vet and I thought maybe it was eclampsia, and she gave her some calcium and there seemed to be improvement, but her blood results didn't indicate low calcium. I never thought of toad licking

It's not something I've ever had a cat knowingly exposed to - seems to be a problem more when they pick up a toad in their mouths to carry inside as a plaything/present.

I had a quick look-see and this was one of the references.

'Toad toxicity. We see occasional cases of exposure to toads in the summer months when the toads are spawning. Toads are most active around dawn and dusk and most toad-related incidents occur in the evening when cats lick them. The onset of signs of poisoning is rapid and you can see drooling, frothing, foaming, pain around the mouth, vomiting, wobbliness, seizures and collapse in severe cases.'

One of the vets who post might have a more informed opinion, though.

She's fine this morning.. so I suspect the vet was right and she'd tried to pick up a toad instead of a frog... I think we might have both in the garden!

MAYBE this will put her off trying to bring them in the house!

Blimmin pesky toad, poor Ophie, glad she is on the mend. I always thought toads being poisonous was an urban myth! It should put her right off tho' with any luck.

We have toads and frogs. Our two never pick either up but do pat them on the head. Then the toad or frog squeals and our cats run away.
