Prolific mouse catcher

Caught my cat with a live mouse earlier,managed to get the cat off him but in the time it took me to lock the cat in another room the little blighter had disappeared.
It has taken me 3 hours to find the vermin ridden cute little thing and my house is in disarray,the cat is pissed off and the poor mouse Will probably be dead by morning from shock anyway.
This is the 4th this week,2 live,2 dead and to think I used to complain when he didn't leave the house for the first 5 months we lived here.
Any ideas what I can do to stop this other than keeping him locked in all the time,we live quite rurally and I didn't have this problem when we lived in a town

Hello, i have the same problem with my two young siamese. We live in a rural village backing on to a field and one of my boys is a bloody nightmare.

He is catching a couple of rats ( yes rats! ) a day and the odd mouse but its more than one and he leaves them on the doorstep if he can't get in with them ( my beautiful bedding has been decorated with a dodgy shade of pink many times ).

I did what you are considering and keep them in but he always seems to find a way out, usually its when i am leaving the house with my young DC he just slips out between our legs.

Anyway i have ordered something on amazon called a 'catbib' I'm really sorry i am rubbish at links but i have two of them and they arrived yesterday, look them up on Google if you are interested!

They attach to the cats collar and are velcro so release if the cat gets caught on anything but they hang down the front of a cat's chest to stop them pouncing ( it's supposed to save birds but works with small mammals too apparently). My two looked none too impressed but so far so good - i will let you know if they work in the long term in a few days! They only cost £20 for two which is a small price to pay to stop the bloodbath that is currently my garden, only one of my cats is a prolific hunter but i bought them both one just in case!

I hate collars, but could you try locking him out at the times he's most likely to come bearing gifts so you can stop him bringing it in? Or at least limit which room his gift gets to? I do feel your pain though, one of mine hunts, but she kills and eats, no playing involved. The other just brings live unharmed stuff home because you know I clearly enjoy spending 3 hours chasing wildlife, whilst killer cat watches on with a yes, I've already eaten so don't expect me to do anything expression on her face.

Thank you for the reply,sounds like a brilliant idea,if only my boy would wear a collar,I've had to install a microchip flap because I couldn't get him to keep a collar on for a magnet.

Ha ha lurked,I hadn't thought of that option.

I'm an awful person,because the dead mice are so much easier to deal with.

Rosie I forgot to mention,if my cat brought rats home,he could have the house because I'd be vacating!!!

I have a prolific hunter too. I inherited him from a local family last year - he is very much an ourdoor cat (was used to scavenging round the gardens as he was scared to go home - big lollopy dog and another cat that he was scared of, hence he came to us), no chance we can keep him indoors.

When he brings mice in (alive) I usually manage to get them from him and release them out of the front door. If he lets them go I just let them run around for a bit and eventually he either catches them or they find their own way out.

Like Hestheone I prefer it when they are dead - much easier to get rid of.

Birds are more messy. He tends to turn them inside out before he discards them . Apart from the sparrow he brought in this morning and just let go to fly around the kitchen. That was fun .

He's a bit of a shit, really.
