Ultima or Royal Canin cat food for a cat with urinary problems?

Just hoping for some advice - my 2.5 year old tom cat has just had surgery for a blocked urinary tract. He's recovering at the vets now but he's going to have to switch to a specialised food - the vet said those are the two main brands but I was wondering which one was better?

Ultima is obviously cheaper and if it's just as good as Royal Canin we'll buy that but I'll happily spend more to give him a better quality food. I'm a bit clueless about these things so any advice (or other brand recommendations) are much appreciated - tia! Smile

Hills offer a prescription diet, urinary health food in tins or dry.

Wet food version is best for cystitis. Was the blockage definitely caused by crystals or was it stress related?

The vet said it was crystals and fur!

Vets like Royal Canin. I use it (not the urinary version) and the boys get on well with it, better than other foods. I would go for the wet version though as cats prone to cystitis need water and they don't get as much with dry food (even taking drinking into account). Hills is good too I hear.

Thanks, we were planning to get both as we do have another cat without urinary problems. I assume that would be okay so long as he's eating the wet the food regularly?

I have to say for a long while I thought all urinary foods were much of a muchness. That is until I put my own cat on hills c/d urinary stress it contains l-tryptophan and it is now my go to first choice urinary diet food for cars.

The Hills one comes in cans so that's good.
