Tomcat sprayed my cat in fight, stinks!

My poor cat was in a nasty fight with a tom last night. Havebeen to vet, wounds cleaned (nasty bite be ear and on nose ) had antibiotic jab, but the other cat also sprayed her and she still stinks, but she isn't cleaning herself and has now retreated under sofa.

I've tried wiping her with damp towels but don't want to add to trauma by bathing her!. Worried her brother will try to chase her out ( he had a go earlier)! Also don't really want her sat on the furniture!

Does anyone have any experience of this? Will she get herself clean eventually? New one on me! Don't know who the cat was btw, just it was obviously a tom (ugh)

Poor cat. Apart from wiping with damp towels I don't see what else you can do. And yes she will clean it all off eventually.

Thanks neuterer. As its warm, would it be OK to get hetr wet without bathing? Wondering if Icould use something more soapy or oily but also edible ( butter?) as I belive the stink is oily and not water soluble?

How do you wet a cat without bathing it? With a hosepipe? I can't see that going down well. If you think she might tolerate bathing you can buy special cat shampoo. I'm not sure how it's different to human shampoo but I would use the cat stuff to be on the safe side

I've never tried to rub butter on a cat. I really have no idea how that would pan out. I think I would just leave her to sort it out herself, revolting though it is.

Ok thanks - no i wasn't planning a hosepipe(!!) just a wet cloth! Guess we'll just have to keep wiping!

I think I might invest in some cat shampoo - I have a feeling you can buy dry stuff. It's just that I seem to recall that Tom spray is not just stinky but also rather oily and sticky. (It's been a while since I had to clean it off anything.)

Thanks, i think i'll try and get some shampoo. Is it easy to find? The wet cloth has got her to start washing finally, but she keeps giving up, and she still smells.

I just don't know I'm afraid. If she's at least started to wash though, maybe she can deal with it herself after all?

I guess it will stick in her mind if nothing else - I shouldn't imagine he'll get a friendly welcome next time he ventures near her!

Got some kitten shampoo to try later, as the washing is still very half hearted. But at least she's sleeping now, not crouched under the sofa looking haunted.
