Advice needed: getting a cat

Can anyone advise me on the best place to get a cat?
We are looking for a Maine coon either full or cross. We want a pet not for breeding and it will be an indoor cat but with a large secure garage adapted as a run with constant access to house.
We would prefer an older kitten, I personally would like to rehome but I know that Maine Coons don't come up for rehoming very often.
My children are 9, 6 and 3 and I am a SAHM, so will be around a lot.
We live in the north west of England.

Aren't MC cats huge? Do they tend to get very fat if indoor only?

I think it might be a bit unkind to get a MC and not let him or her out.
Not the right breed for such a life.

Thanks for the feedback. I may have to revise the plan Grin
We have a large secure garden I was just concerned about next doors dogs.
If outdoor access is kinder then of course I will find a way. Hopefully I can cat proof the fencing.

Cats love going out. And they can handle dogs!

Hi -

A good place to start would be one of the cat clubs - either the Maine Coon Breed Society or the Maine Coon Cat Club. They should be able to put you in touch with breeders who have kittens or owners looking to re-home older cats.

Good luck - they're a fantastic breed.
