How can I stop my cat scratching our carpet?

Got a brand new carpet last week and the cat can't stop scratching it. Is there anything I can do to keep her away from it - maybe a deterrant or something?

Having plenty of attractive alternatives. Upright posts, horizontal corrugated cardboard boxes, carpet offcuts etc. You can only redirect scratching, can't stop it.
