Misdiagnosis of serious injury by vet- I'm so angry and upset :-(

One of our adored cats Hugo was diagnosed with muscle damage last week after coming home unable to walk properly. The vet we saw said that he would be fine after a few days rest-he has spent the last week just sleeping only managing to walk as far as the litter tray. He went from being a lovely crazy 3 year old hunter who could come down the stairs in 2 bounds and jump up over 6 foot to a sad, spitting unhappy cat who can hardly move.
We took him back to the vets today as we were so worried that despite the rest he wasn't getting better for him to be seen by another vet. He took one look at him and immediately said it was obvious he had got a broken pelvis Shock
The vet said because of the delay in treatment the pelvis would be fusing back together. He is going in first thing tomorrow to be operated on Sad I am so angry and upset that such a serious injury wasn't picked up by the first vet so he has suffered needlessly for a week.
I'm worried about the operation and how long it will take for him recover from it - has anyone got any experience they can reassure me with please? I have 2 adult children but Hugo and his big brother are my babies and I love and worry about them so much. I feel so guilty that I excepted what the first vet said and he has had to suffer so much Sad

Thank you for your replies and concern. For the first time since the accident 13 days ago Hugo came into bed this morning purring and wanting his head and nose stroked. It was a lovely sound. dh said he doesnt complain at all when they clean the burns He is such a brave boy Sad Lonecat-why would the puss be orange do you think?

Maybe some blood mixed in with it? (Yellow (infection) + red (blood) = orange.)

Just a thought.

springbabydays · 24/02/2015 23:16

Hi all, a quick update from "Hugo the brave" as he's now known at the vets Grin he had to have a lot of his tail shaved as well yesterday as the burn was also on there and the top part was filling up with fluid due to the infection. He is going in on Monday to have the burn cleaned and the scabs removed and a special dressing stiched on to help the healing. The vet said it will look worse before it looks better.
I have been feeling very sad and teary about it all over the last few days, I love him and his brother so much and I can't bear to see him suffering Sad
For those of you with a strong stomach here is a picture of my poor brave little boy. Sad

Hugo the Brave. Smile What a lad!

Is there any idea yet how he acquired the burn?

fudgesmummy · 27/02/2015 21:00

Exhaust pipe from a car or bike the vets think. They said he would have been seconds from death and they can't imagine how he made his way home

Because he's a brave lad. Simple. Smile

Mylittlepotofjoy · 28/02/2015 00:06

SirVixofVixHall · 28/02/2015 11:39

Goodness that is horrendous, such a huge area. I feel tearful seeing that. Am so glad that he is alive. Really hope he recovers as quickly as possible.

shaska · 28/02/2015 13:54

Oh my god that is horrifying. Poor brave lad!

A second thanks to lonecat for 'Burns 101' - hopefully won't be info I'll ever need but useful to have stored away.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 28/02/2015 21:28

Oh bless him, he really deserves to be called Hugo the Brave. I hope he's soon on the mend.

cozietoesie · 02/03/2015 20:07

How's the lad doing?

ShebaRabbit · 05/03/2015 19:36

Any update on Hugo the brave?

fudgesmummy · 16/03/2015 19:01

Hi all, thanks for thinking of my brave boy! The vets have decided that no operation is needed on his back as the burns are healing well. Another large burn has emerged on his tail which I guess would explain why it's so swollen and filled with fluid. He is allowed out now which I think has done him the world of good as the burns are drying up even more. We have decided that the pleasure he gets from being allowed out is worth the risk of infection in the patches that are still open wounds xx

Shaska's thread yesterday reminded me. I wonder how he's doing?
