Adopting a cat (or 3!)

At the end of last year we had to have the last of our 3 cats pts. He was old and had a good life and we miss him.

However I think now we are ready to adopt a cat again.

We would like 2 and are going to visit a local cattery tomorrow to see 2 that were abandoned together so know each other well. A boy and a girl.

I would like a ginger cat as have always wanted one, no real reason other than I like ginger cats!! The 2 that we are going to see are tabby and white and torteshell (sp). There is however another cat, housed in another home but part of the same rescue centre, a ginger and white boy.

My question is - would you potentially put all 3 together in one house?

We would have 2 boys and one girl. Previously we have had 2 girls (from the same litter) and one boy who was a stray who turned up on our doorstep one day, and they all got along well.

I will obviously be asking the same question to the cattery but thought I would see what the great powers that MN is for their opinion!!

As long as the ginger is a cat that likes other cats it should be doable. The fact that it's two boys should make no difference. The rescue should be able to tell you how he reacts to other cats.

Thank you for your reply! The ginger boy is kept with other cats so he seems to be ok with others. I'll see what the rescue people say, but perhaps I will be getting 3 furry ones in the house again!!

two boys and one girl is a better combination than 2 girls and one boy as girls are dominant in cat society so this combination would allow the girl in the bunch to be the boss and the boys to potentially ally with each other, i have three boys who are all different ages and from different parents and one girl who is the sisiter of one of the boys, they all get on with each other but madam is allowed to be the boss cat despite being the smallest of the bunch

I did exactly this - different coat colours - but worked out great. The rescue put them together first to check, and all well, all 3 are inseparable, tis lovely.

Thanks for your replies! After visiting the cat rescue place, we decided to have the 2 girls that are possibly sisters and were rescued together and not the other ginger boy. The main reason for this is that the ginger boy had found a home by the time we visited!! but also one of the female cats was so timid and wary after what she has been through we thought it better to settle her first before introducing any other unknown cats to her.

Having said she was timid, within 20 minutes of me crouching beside her and letting her come to me in her own time, she was lying at my feet with her belly on show and holding my finger with her paw! She certainly has the potential to be a very loving cat once she has learnt to trust us.

Aww they sound lovely. And it doesn't mean you won't be able to take in another cat or even two in the future. It's wonderful that you are rescuing rather than buying.

Sorry you missed out on the ginger boy but lovely that you have taken the 2 girls. Do you have any photos of them?

Sorry Timtam only just seen your post! I don't have any photo's yet, but I am sure once they are living with us there will be numerous photo's taken!! We are going away for a few days so are picking them up when we are back, not fair to bring them here then leave them again.

We are picking them up next week.

Thecatneuterer - I feel there are many homeless cats that would love a home so have always rescued in the past and not bought cats.

Have just taken delivery of a huge climbing/scratching/bed thing for them, I bet they ignore it!
