Calicicivirus?

It seems little cat may have this She's not well bless her. She's had a rough week after being spayed, didn't recover well and now this and she's very fed up. I'm just wondering if anyone has any experience? Is it something she'll get better from or something she's always going to have that will reactivate?

Seniorboy has been left - after presumably having a dose of flu sometime in his youth - with chronic rhinitis which manifests mainly as heavy snottery sneezing every couple of months or so. (Sorted out so far by ABs.) That didn't start until he was coming up to 18 though, his immune system presumably starting to get weaker. He had umpty years of being fine - and even now is fine once he's seen the vet+2 days for the ABs to take effect.

What has your vet said?

Vet hasn't said much as yet. We took her in again today as she was really off colour , lip smacking, salivating off food etc and she has a very sore tongue so vet suspects the virus. This is on the back of a few days of coughing and a sore throat after spaying although I'm unsure whether the two are related. Has prescribed painkillers and is seeing her again on Sunday. Said that stress of op may have activated virus. Cat has had no contact with other cats since we got her at 9 weeks. I guess I'll have to wait and see what happens.

My 15 year old rescue tabby had this. The rescue centre said he had a chronic condition - calcivirus and stomatitis. His eyes had tear stains and his teeth were terrible. Once we had him home we took him to the vet who said the condition meant he was allergic to the plaque his mouth created and the only option was to remove his teeth. We went ahead, he only has four teeth left which is no problem with anything he eats. It has improved his quality of life and he is pain free. I am sure a vet will be along shortly to advise you properly but I just wanted you to know the situation doesn't have to seem hopeless. All the best for your little kitty. Thanks Rolly I'm sorry your kitty had such a rough time but glad they are doing well now. It seems confusing. At least I'll have an idea of what questions I can ask the vets on Sunday..she seemed totally healthy before she was spayed last friday and hasn't been well since.

It could well be that stress has hit her immune system. Poor lass.

Hope she recovers soon.

There are several different strains of Calici hence the variety of symptoms. Hopefully she hasn't got 'super Calici'.

With all strains careful nursing is the most important thing.

Thanks guys she's just been very sick but ooh vets seem to think that's the metacam rather than the virus. Looking like we'll be back at the vets tommorow morning with her.

Is she using her tray OK?

Yes..things are a bit loose but not awful. She keeps retching but it's being made much worse by her intermittently wanting to run around which is a vast improvement on earlier. I'm going to bed now in the hope she'll join me and not vomit on the duvet

I hope she'll make that useful 'plumbing' noise which they often do - and that you've taken some kitchen towel with you. Best of luck overnight.

Thanks Cozie. Kitty is recovering. She's still got a very sore and ulcery tongue so is on tramadol but hopefully she'll be ok xx

Poor girl - is she managing to eat anything?

The vets given us some super sloppy food which she loves fortunately. I'm only managing to get the tablets into her by hiding them in a lump of cheese which probably isn't ideal but she just leaves anything else they are hidden in.

I'm so glad she's eating and on her way to recovery.
