please help can metronidazole cause black stools

Have 2 kittens aged 5 and 7 months, got the youngest one a month ago and he's not been 100% since we've had him. He's had smelly, poo with red blood in it but after worming, parasite treatment and metronidazole seemed a lot better. He's just been sick (which he has been when eaten too much on a couple of occasions) all fish, and had a tarry colour poo. Could this be a side effect of the antibiotics or does he need seeing tonight. Seems well in himself.

Seen it listed as side effect in humans but don't know about cats

I've taken loads of metronidazole myself over the years and it had this affect on me... Sorry I don't know about the effect on cats.

Thanks for replying they seem well in themselves so will call vet tomorrow. I seem to remember it gave me green wee..

Thanks cozie, I've taken that drug more times than I care to remember til I had my wisdom teeth out.

Older one has just done a similar poo so l wonder if it is the antibiotics, seems too much of a coincidence for it not to be. They're both charging round like crazy things so hopefully feeling ok.

I seem to remember many many horrific side effects of metro (had it for a tropical disease). Have been feeling bad for your poor cat, hope it gets better.

Yeah it's nasty isn't it madam? Makes me feel dreadful. Older kitten fights us every time we try and get it in her! He's ok though. They're so much brighter since being on it though, much more kitten naughtiness in evidence!

Been back to the vets as he vomited, they're not too concerned, apparently it can cause black stools and he seems very well in himself. Got a probiotic to give him, hoping that helps too.

Thanks cozie. He's loads better than when he first arrived a few weeks back, poo is no longer bloody and 7 times a day! He's grown loads and is a total sweetheart, likes to be cuddled like a baby.
