My poor cat being terrorised by a big black menace!

Lovely new cat has settled in smashing into our family - eats well, toilets appropriately and is wonderful with my two small DC.

Just one issue - a neighbours cat seems to view our back yard as his and basically sits on the step outside the cat flap and makes my poor cats life shit. I think my cat, 6 yr old boy, is not the most dominant of fellows and is now too scared to venture out if black cat is on the vicinity.

It started as just yowling at each other out the back but this camping out by the cat flap is upsetting me - my boy won't go out even though, allegedly, he was a fierce hunter before he came to us.

Any tips - before I can even get the door open, black cat is gone so can't spray etc... do I just wait for my cat to grow a bit of backbone to wrestle his territory back or can I give him a helping hand in some way?

Could you super soak him from an upstairs window?

Good idea on the soaking from upstairs. There used to be a cat called Basil living next door to us. He was scary! Think cats & dogs the movie with the squashed face and long hair. He used to come in to our house and sit on the sofa. My two cats would be cowering upstairs. He didn't even move when I came in! I then did the bowl of water over him. There's no way I could hurt him. I spoke to the owner who apologised but we both knew cats will do what they damn well please.

Thanks both - and that's the thing, black cat is just defending what it obviously sees as it's territory, but it's not!

I could certainly try throwing water from upstairs, does seem mean in this weather though.. although would stop it potentially as do hate hearing them at it. .. argh, what to do!

I have a giant black cat, he is a terror to other cats. Really horrible and always picking fights ( i dont think he wins very often because he is always coming home battered and covered in mud)
But i have prewarned all of our neighbours about him - he loves people and is very very friendly- and told them all to soak him with a hose or bucket of water. I would much rather harmless water then my poor neighbours getting sick of him and possibly hurting him - extreme and unlikely i know!

What is it with black cats - my best friend growing up had a gorgeous black cat who was definitely the head honcho in his hood (when he died, their other cat got ten bells knocked out of him for months ).

I could never hurt him and, as mentioned above, it's pretty cold and wet already at the moment so not sure if a soaking would be particularly kind right now.

C'mon my cat - it's your garden so fight the bloody thing off!!

We have the same issue. Massive black cat - I think he is part Maine coon, sits in DD's flower box, squashing all our flowers, waiting to leap on my poor boy.

I spray him with water and he just glares at me. I secretly admire his chutzpah, but do feel sorry for poor peaceful Wonc cat.

Honestly you'll probably be doing his owners a favour. Id much rather a wet soggy puss then a scratched up bruiser!

I am so sick of him coming home with infected scratches, tips of his ears have been ripped, he has so many scars on his face and around his eyes- i am seriously worried he will loose an eye!

I've watched the neighbours pour water onto my cat during scuffles.

We have a black and white cat that terrorised our cat. He attacked her so much she ended up in the vets twice.
We got a super soaker and have got him a couple of times from the upstairs windows. It is always primed and by the back door.

Evil cat has got much braver - I'm just sat in my living room waiting for my custard to cool (am in the depths of some Bavarian gateau nightmare for DD), glance next to me and there it is, bold as bloody brass, just sat tucked in beside the sofa

I reached out to try and pet it so I could encourage it to leave and full on hiss - proper horrible and scared me shitless!
Promptly got a glass of water and dumped it on it, it then proceeded to race round my Xmas tree and then finally back out the cat flap

I can't afford a microchip cat flap at the mo (and I also rent so don't want to leave something that expensive behind) but that scared me witless! It was just sat there - staring at me!! You know when something just doesn't feel right and I just looked and arghhhh

Hope water has persuaded it to leave us alone for the festive season but given the sheer balls it's shown tonight, who knows...

I'm beginning to really dislike this big black cat...

After the water throwing, I think (only think mind you) that It has twigged not to come in but has now taken to battering the cat flap.. so my cat comes haring in followed about 10 seconds later by the cat flap being battered

I guess my cat has the safety of the house but I hate that he is so intimidated in his own yard..

Tried opening the only window that I could really get the cat from and it seems to be stuck. its also the old fashioned push up windows which weigh a ton so I think by the time I get it up and arm myself, like with the back door, cat will be long gone.. argh!

Oh OP I feel for you I really do. Our situ is made worse as we are in flats so boundaries are confused. I have a long haired black cat bubbles who has two girls patch and gizmo. They just want to play happily together and then come in and snooze the day away. My neighbour has a very angry Bengal. He can't get in their house from 7am - 7pm. If he's not back before they go to work he's just left hungry for the day. So he's cold, hungry and usually wet. My girls are scared to go out because he terrorises them every time he catches them. 2 are clever and can walk the steps up to my balcony I have put for them. But little Giz he gets her every time !!

Kyles - it is horrible, isn't it? At least my puss has our house - although obviously that has been breached once. My cat was home at the time and I would never have known there was an intruder from his behaviour...

This is all new to me - my previous, tiny cat was very dominant and used to just sit and watch others fight in front of her.. like some sort of Queen watching her gladiators

If the bad cat is coming in the house then try a microchip cat flap. Our cat used to get chased into the house until we got one.

Stop letting your cat roam to kill wildlife when he's well fed.

But 100% with the water .

My NDN had a huge ginger male that decided to have my garden. (I kept him out when I had guinea-pigs, they scare very easily )
When I was waiting for my cats , I chased him out with an "Oi!" , handclap or water if he didn't listen.
But , in fainess , I told my NDNs if they wanted my cats out of their gardens to use water too .
