Please can someone explain pedigree lineage to me

This is more about curiosity as I didn't initially view my kitten as being pedigree..
My friend 'rescued' two sister kittens from a place that bred Persians (they are legit , registered breeders). They were unwanted due to their pure persian mother having somehow got pregnant with a moggy. They were unhappy little things and my friend couldn't bear to leave them(she was on holiday and came across them quite by accident really) so she bought them off the breeder who basically wanted nothing to do with cats that weren't pure :-(
Anyway..these two half breed kittens grew up to be beautiful girls... (but v timid and not at all socialised, due to their bad start)One of them looks 100% persian...the other I'd say about 70% in looks.
About a year and a half later my friend let them have kittens of their own. They had them three weeks apart and with moggie fathers (true identity not proved but we have good hunches i.e. toms that were letting themselves into her house/ garden)
I have a now 4month old kitten from the mother that is slightly less persian looking than her sister. He looked entirely moggie when tiny and is now a little more persian looking but not as much as his mother (I'll post photo of him) e.g. he doesn't have the very rounded, pug like face like his aunt but he has the eyes and more delicate, feminine features of his mother
To me he's just mainly moggie with a dash of persian... a quarter persian? though the persian side seems to be emerging more and more and face gone from v pointy to more rounder (unless it's winter coat coming through)
but someone recently told me that if the matriarchal line is pure persian (which it is) then that makes him persian too. How?

what i have noticed is, the dotty bits on his face (i.e. whiskers roots!) have really filled out and are puffy..but isnt that usual in toms?

so , is he def a moggy but with slight persian looks / colouring?

DP is worried about him looking too 'pedigree' as thinks it will put him at more risk of being stolen (he doesn't go out yet)

The kittens are 1/4 Persian. You cannot pass them off as pure Persian.

Please ask your friend to have the breeding females spayed - it's really not on to have then wandering round being impregnated by random toms every few months.

And make sure you have your kittens neutered/spayed too.

Beware the handsome male cats they are often arrogant opinionated cads, mine certainly is.

Unscrupulous breeders will sometimes allow 'unscrupulous things' to happen with breeding, especially if a blood line is becoming attenuated or a rare colour point is thrown in a litter (line breeding/outbreeding with dubious documentation etc are examples) so it's always important to get to know a breeder and their circumstances and do your homework before actually buying a pedigree cat.

Your boy sounds like a quarter Persian - and looks quite scrumptious by the way.

PS - will he be going outside? If so, and with that colouring, you'd best be thinking about sunscreen for those ears in summer. (White cats can get sun-related cancers on their ears, sadly.)

hmmm that's interesting, Cozie. There was never any intent to have a pedigree cat but I was curious. Friend rescued these two miserable little kittens who were apparently unwanted due to not being pure and were stuck in a small cage together. And they just happened to be half persian. She would have had them whatever they were, as they were just such sad little things.

I agree - he's quarter persian.

Sometimes breeders sell "variants" that are still registered, and will give you the appropriate paperwork. These variants are kittens resulting from an out-cross program, sometimes necessary to strengthen bloodlines, and to decrease in-breeding.

However, from what you've said, it appears that she got pregnant by mistake, not through a selective breeding program.

I got my kitten neutered recently at Pets At Home's in-house vet. They were fantastic and it only cost me £47 to get him neutered and chipped.

What a gorgeous kitten! I strongly second Cozie's advice about sunscreen - when my big bad blue-and-white boy spent a night at the vet's recently there was a lovely white cat in the next pen who had had major surgery to its ears due to skin cancer caused by sun exposure. Our lovely vet hoped it would make a good recovery, but it will need a lot of care.

friend didn't get paperwork. she only wanted one kitten but couldnt leave the other and they were so miserable she got them both at a v cheap price. it wasnt about the money but getting them the hell out of there. however , they've never really socialised .. that's why with the two litters we got them used to touch and socialised from start
Mine's been chipped at Pets at home (in case he bolts out the front door) but not neutered yet

apparently the grandma got pregnant by mistake with a moggy male and not planned. The owner seemed really horrified by this (umm who's fault was it?! not the cats!) and just wanted the babies gone as they werent pure (they look pure short hair persians though to my eyes..the mothers I mean... i used to work in a cattery and looked after lots of persians; but am not an expert on pedigree

My parents have this kitten (my cat's cousin). HER mother is the more persian looking one.. as you can see..this little one has no persian features at all though has amber eyes now... mum is pure white yet had a ginger, a tortoiseshell (this one) and a dark brown!

is he a cornish rex kitten?? just adorable

I got it from Amazon, they come up really tiny though. He's 14 weeks in the photo, and a much smaller breed than persian-ey types. Doesn't fit him anymore at 8 months.

He's a devon rex - very similar looking to a cornish, with the curls.
