3rd eyelid protruding ...

My beautiful boy has just turned 1. Last week his third eyelid on both eyes suddenly became visible. I took him to the vet today and she could find nothing wrong at all. So it's just a waiting game to see if they right themselves. Any ideas?

We gave him copius amounts quite a lot of dried catnip, not realising it's an ACTUAL drug to cats Vet says the effects would have worn off long before now. I can't help thinking it's connected though.

A whole variety of things can cause it, third eyelid rising is related to decrease in size of the fat pad behind the eye.

The vet checked everything and could find nothing at all ... It's been 4-5 days now...

Did they mention torovirus? You just have to let run it's course and supportive treatment if the cat develops diarrhoea. It can last up to three weeks also know as disease of the cat.

He doesn't have a temperature so no virus/infection ..

You often don't get a temperature with torovirus.

I've just done a quick google search for it ... my cat doesn't have diarrhoea or any other symptoms. He's a bit lethargic but that's all.

Often protruding third eyelids is the only sign. I see probably at least one case a week in my clinic.

Ah right. His only thing wrong are both the eyelids. He's a bit lethargic but that's all. What do I need to do for torovirus? Also, could too much dried herb catnip not be the cause? I'm really convinced we overdosed him! I think he's had a reaction to the 'cat drug'

We had this with our cat once. The vet said he had Haws syndrome and it would clear up by itself. Which it did.

Seniorboy sometimes develops a third eyelid when he's gearing up for a dose of snuffling and sneezing. (He has residual cat flu - a post viral mumble to be more precise - which manifests more these days because his immune system is likely pretty awful.)

I take it your lad has been vaccinated?

Yes he's had all his vaccs. I just found it odd that the vet could find nothing at all. He's in perfect health apart from the sudden eyelids. So she said just to see how he goes

After a few MONTHS they can refer him to the eye clinic if it's still there. I just find it odd that it came up from nowhere, literally overnight. After his drugs binge

Quick update for anyone still watching/interested. My lovely Alfie's eyes are back to normal! Wey Hey! I assume it was some kind of virus, took about 3 weeks to clear. Sooo pleased he's back to his normal self. Thanks for all help and advice.

Glad he's better now and I hope that's the one and only occurrence.
