The last one limited it to £2000 a year - which I thought a bit disingenuous when it advertised £20,000 but apparently that was over the policy

It might be worth a look at Animal Friends. When I was adopted by Wiliam I thought about insuring him and I got a quote for them even though he was a lot older than your cat (he was about 13 or 14).

To be honest 5 isn't old and most insurers would cover a cat of that age.

The pet insurance I have from John Lewis says there is no upper age limit if that helps.

Goodness - 5's not old. He's not only in his prime, he's got past that stage where some conditions manifest. I wouldn't choose that mob on basic principle.

Cats protection have an agreement with Petplan that any aged cat they rehome will get full lifetime cover after the free month if people sign up for it.

So might be worth trying them for your young 5 year old. The one I was contemplating rehoming is 14...

Good to let people know about anyway as it might remove one barrier to older cats bring rehomed if its known they'll get full lifetime cover guaranteed.

I haven't had Seniorboy insured (circumstances) but my general principle with all insurance is to do my homework. The small print really matters when you make a claim and the oft-maligned internet can be a good source of home truths about companies you're thinking of dealing with.

I have little loyalty to particular insurance companies because they have little loyalty to their customers these days.

No, not at all. Insurance is a fast-changing market so it behoves us all to check always for the best deal overall.

I've just changed H from Animal Friends to Petplan. It's more expensive but better cover and he's worth it! I was impressed that they haven't excluded the 2 things he's seen the vet for.

Nastycat started with Sainsburys insurance when she was seven and we have never had any trouble getting them to pay out (though to be honest I don't know what the limit is). Now she is 17 and we have to pay 20% of all bills. Have also used PetPlan and never had any trouble with them.

My Mum had her dog insured with Sainsburys and had no problems getting them to pay out. She ended up cancelling it though as it went up to £100 a month.
