The cats meeow

Actually they don't.

We've had our two kittens since the end of May, they've settled in perfectly, sit on command, come when they want to called. They're fairly affectionate (on their own terms) one loves to be held like a baby and the other licks your hand when he's feeling the love. But neither of them meeow! Ever. They purr, one of them will give a pathetic squeak that is almost a meeow when they're starving and you're putting out their food and taking your time, and the other makes some odd grunt like noises when playing. But general conversational meowing - it never happens.

The cats we had before would meeow if you looked at them, but I can't remember whether they meowed when they were kittens or not. Is it something they might grow into, should I start meeowing at them to encourage them?

So you have quiet cats?

Some cats just aren't vocal.

I want quiet cats! Mine gives me a running commentary as he saunters about the house...

abigamarone · 22/10/2014 22:49

I wouldn't say quiet, with the racket they make when they chase each other and thunder round the house, sounds like a herd of elephants.

I watched BBC's catwatch thing the other day, they seemed to indicate that cats communicate with their owners via meeowing, mine just stare.

You are obviously so well trained that they control you with just their eyes.

Fluffy made reference to a few days back. Be careful of what you might wish for!

our old girl hardly meows - it hadn't really occurred to me, but when DM came to stay she commented how quiet she was.

Our little boy cat is very vocal - shouts his head off at DH of a morning when the poor man's trying to get ready for work.

Bloody hell, those Siamese sound like deranged sheep! Brilliant video! Grin
OP I have 3 cats and only one meows. A metallic "talking" kind of meow - he responds to anything you say, it's great. The other three are pretty generally silent apart squeaks, purrs and the odd growl when the farm cats are just outside the catflap, preventing exit.

CatKisser · 23/10/2014 19:35

other TWO!

Scarletohello · 23/10/2014 23:18

My cat only miaows when I'm about to give him his food. Purrs all the time tho..!
