Advice re letting out kitten into garden

OK, have got an almost 6 month old kitten. Very coddled by owner I got him a month ago, he was with mum, doting adults and another cat and Rottie until then.

I am getting him neutered and 2nd lot of injections on Friday/Saturday then plan to let him out.

However there's a huge male Tabby (Handsome) next door who's moving soon (december/January) who I sort of adopted when he moved in as I had a female cat I wanted him to be friends with - she's since passed away earlier this year.

Anyway my mum thinks (she lives nearby) partly due to him being with mum so long etc that he'll be eaten alive by Handsome (they don't get on when he comes round) and that I should wait until Handsome moves.... Also she wondered what I would do about other cats coming in through the catflap? Its non magnetic. There are a few cats around.

so MN Litter Tray people, what's your advice please? He's insured but I had enough of my old cat Snowy (another one) being attacked/fighting and it's not so much the vets bills but taking them there - Snowy had to have drips, drains etc...

Thanks! Smile

If it were me I would wait until the other cat has moved away before I let my kitten out. It won't hurt him to become really well established at yours before venturing out. He will be a few months older & wiser by then too.

In the meantime I would buy a SureFlap which works off his microchip and get that installed. This means that only your cat will be able to get into your house. If you don't, other cats may venture in and threaten your kitten's territory and eat his food.

Good luck!

Update on this - I've been home briefly this morning past my normal leaving time and my kitten was flying and pummeling at the French window where Handsome was.

Last night when Handsome was around again I gave them treats, held Felix up to Handsome and let them sniff (to try to get them to be friends).

I think I may see until I'm at home and he's had injections to see about him going into garden with me and not alone. Thanks for the tip re chip and catflap.
