Is it dangerous if a cat eats a mouse that has eaten poison?

We have mice in our roof and so there is poison up there. Obviously the cats can't get up into the loft area where the poison is, but my fear is that a mouse will somehow get down into the main house area (happens from time to time) and get eaten by a cat. DH convinced it would be fine as poison would be digested/diluted in the body of the mouse, but I am not so sure. Anyone know for sure????

I suspect there are a lot of variables - eg how much rodenticide the rodent has ingested, when they had it, how much (if any) of the rodent the cat eats, which parts they eat and so on and so on ......

One of the vets who post - or a more experienced poster - might have a definitive answer but I just know that I wouldn't risk it, particularly as cats who are mousers may eat more than one mouse which has ingested poison.

With cats in the house, I use traps in places the cats can't get to. (Mice and rats can get everywhere behind the walls etc.)

Quick answer - yes it is.

You could try humane traps - and just 'relocate' your mice ....

I would use any method of pest control other than poisoning. It is horribly cruel. I agree with thecatneuterer.

Not quite any method kinkytoes. Glue traps are worse still.

Thanks everyone. I was pretty sure it was risky. Will clear out poison and replace with traps. I loathe all vermin with a passion and so will have to persuade DH to be in charge of emptying the traps, but I suppose no worse than him having to dispose of corpses. All pretty gross.

it is not only dangerous for cats to eat poisoned rodents but if they get out of the house and die outside predators like owls pick them up eat them and they die as well due to poisoning of rodents the owl population in this country has been decimated
