What are the circumstances, Dog ? (eg Why is she having to use it again, how old is she and is she healthy and what is the household like? That sort of thing.)

She is adopted, 5yo, indoor cat. The history is that we used to let her sit on the roof, but she used it as a toilet. We don't let her anymore, so she probably feels offended.

Well in my experience something is wrong with her life because cats generally like to be clean so not going in a tray in a healthy young cat is usually a protest of some sort as you said. (Or a fear or tension.)

I suspect that you're going to have to look at her life in the round - not only what sort of litter and tray you're using (some cats can be almighty fusspots about those) but also from what you've said briefly, how the rest of her life is going. In particular, what sort of activities and play does she have and how does she interact with the family? (I'm wondering for example whether she's possibly bored and at a loose end.)

Would you be prepared to let her be an outside-going cat?

  1. we took time to choose appropriate litter. She wouldn't have anything bought from supermarkets, only a special shop. Now she refuses even that.

  2. we tried to take her outside, but all she does is just sit on the garden table. Doesn't explore or anything.

  3. she does not play much, is not interested in toys, but she loves cuddles. Most of the time she is in human company.

  4. she does not like the dog. Hisses and spits at him, but not as bad as it was when he first arrived. He tries not to go near her.
