Sodding fleas

I frontline my cat regularly.
But he appears to have fleas. Well, he does have fleas.

What else can I do?

Also one jumped on my iPad earlier, so they're not just on him.

I need to treat the house, how do I do that?

Thanks

The vet's will supply you with the appropriate product.
Vacuum everything and apply.
It isn't cheap but it works wonders.

There's also a wealth of info on here re. fleas.

Just pop 'fleas' in the search box. Smile

Use a good quality product like Advocate, Activyl or Broadline on the cat and treat the house with a good quality product like Idexx or Acclaim.

Fleas have become immune to frontline, we started using advantage instead and that sorted it very quickly.

Sleepytea · 21/09/2014 08:05

We stopped using frontline even though our vet told us there was nothing wrong with it. We switched to advocate and haven't had a problem since.

  1. Use good product every month on ALL pets (shop bought frontline ok but better if use something on prescription from vet as they kill larvae as well as adult fleas.) 2.) Use household spray such as Acclaim or Indorex which kills all stages of life cycle. Hoovering before ( including under furniture) and every day after application for a few days increases effectiveness. 3.) wash pets bedding, sofa covers etc in hot wash.

Your problem is in the house (95% of the infestation always is). Get this sorted before you turn central heating on or there might be an explosion! ;)

As the others have said, ask your vet for a more effective product on the cat, also worm him with something that covers the flea tapeworm e.g. Drontal cat.
For the house you need a spray containing permethrin + an insect growth regulator like Smethoprene. (Indorex, acclaim, RIP flea, Nuvan staykill) which you can buy over the counter from your vet or online. The fleas have a life stage where they are in a pupa and at this stage the spray won't kill them, so you need them to hatch. Warmth, humidity, noise and vibration encourages hatching so heating on, bowl of water on the radiator, Hoover first, then spray, concentrating round skirting boards and under heavy furniture. Spray the whole house even if the cat doesn't have access everywhere. Chuck all bedding on a hot wash. do it once properly then keep treating the cat monthly. With the best will in the world a few pupae will survive, but as they hatch the fleas will jump on to the cat and be killed.

My vet tell me that the problem is huge this year. I normally buy online. I'd tried Frontline, Effipro, Advocate and god knows what else. Nothing was working. Then my vet recommended Stronghold.

I bought the prescriptions from the surgery and the Stronghold online (from a trusted, well known UK supplier) - it's cheaper than buying from the vet. I used Indorex around the house.

Problem solved!

I'm impressed that despite my latest rescue being a flea-ridden kitten there's still no problem. She wasn't treated until the day after coming to me but the other animals have remained flea free regardless.

Stronghold's a little more expensive to buy prescription only flea treatment but was well worth it.

Sorry.

"Stronghold's a little more expensive to buy because it's prescription only flea treatment but was well worth it."

I need caffeine.

Thank you all.

Off to the vets with him tomorrow. I know I should have searched in here, but I was in an "OH MY GOD FLEAS" moment!

Small child has bites all over his legs and arms. I feel hideous.

No idea frontline didn't work anymore.

Poor cat. Poor DS.
