kitten suckling on me

My gorgeous 4-month old kitten keeps trying to suckle at my inner elbow. He seems to be enjoying it as he's purring the whole time but it's a bit weird.... Any ideas why he's doing it and should I let him, or try and train him out of it?

Don't they normally do that when they are taken from their mother too soon.

One of mine did this, I didn't mind. Up to you if you want to train her out of it I suppose

He was 12 weeks when we got him, I appreciate he's still little though.

I don't particularly object if he's going to stop off his own accord anyway. I just don't fancy the next few years of having cat slobber on my jumpers! Did yours stop off his own accord PartyFops?

We had a cat who did this til the day he died aged 17. We found him as a tiny abandoned kitten tho so that's maybe why. We just let him as he found ti comforting :D

They do it for comfort as Medusa said. The fact that he's chosen you to bestow this on means he feels most secure with you.

I had one who would do this to my ear (it gave me the hebejeebees!) and she grew out of it. My boy cat still suckles on his tail when he's blissed out.

Yes she carried on, but we lost her when she was about 9. (Bloody speeding drivers )

Mine does this to my earlobe. Very sweet but she kneads me with claws out now too at the same time, and it bloody hurts!

Yes mine also gets the claws out, it's pretty uncomfortable. Nice to know that he's doing it because he feels secure with me. He's so cute it's hard to deny him anything but I might try gently discouraging. Thanks all. Going to try attaching a cute kitten picture....

Feral kitten suckles me but she was a little hand reared orphan (I hand reared the litter) so was definitely taken away from mum too soon (well, mum was taken away from her )
