My sons cat /kitten ?? Had 5 kittens on Thursday morning my 7 yr old and I watched last two being born he lives near me so we have been visiting a lot but unfortunately today when we visited and mummy cat went for a walk round house we noticed one wasn't moving she/he was still warm but unfortunately she had died. My daughter was totally devastated we had to have funeral etc but I'm now worried about the other kittens was it just one of those things? Or should I be watching for something? I'm on kitty watch tomorrow as his partner is back at work and basically I'm crapping myself in case I go find a kitten in distress or worse still dead/dying. I have weighed them tonight and gonna weigh tomorrow evening to see if they are a gaining weight any input would be appreciated I've only ever had dogs

Well it might be him (if he's not neutered) or it might be some other tom who saw the opportunity - or indeed both. (Sadly, they're not too fussy when they're in heat: you can easily have more than one father.)

I'll confess that I did have a few thoughts about her 'owner's' parenting skills but I let them be as you were on the scene.

Remind us when you became a cat person? Wink

I haven't lol. I'm gonna go with daughter when they come home from work to let her help weigh them. I think she has accepted that sometimes animals die and mummy cat still likes her and isn't blaming her for taking one of her kittens :-).

If either of the ginger kittens are female, then the ginger tom - or another ginger tom! - must be their father, though not necessarily the father of the rest of the litter. You can't make female ginger kittens without a ginger dad and a ginger or tortie mum.

In my experience, cats cant count. They know what death and loss are but those things seem to slide down their priority list fairly quickly. I feel for your DD though - it's hard at her age.

soremummy · 02/09/2014 22:22

Glad they can't count as such! Battery was gone in my scales but on theirs seem to have average of 10/20 g gain on all four so that's good I might do a bit of tail lifting tomorrow :-) see what they have got but I'm laughing at them cos they weren't gonna keep a kitten but big fat ginger seems to be appealing to them but it's gonna be a big cat I reckon just looking at its feet etc and huge bum/hips at back end I will try my best to see if a boy or girl tomorrow but I might get it wrong I'm still a dog person at heart (but I'm like mummy /grandma to them at the moment But hubbie allergic to cat hair so that rules us out ) should I dump him??? Lol my youngest is happy if her brother keeps her big fat ginger cat at his house so she can visit play etc with it ! She knows dad can't have it here an a bit unfair to old dogs we have I guess we are gonna be like step parents to big fat ginger x

Good weight gains - and BFG mat be a girl but she's a serious trencherman nonetheless. Is she welded to a teat?

Fluffycloudland77 · 03/09/2014 19:04

Dh is allergic to cats but has inhalers and he's fine now. Plus he knows his place.

You're very attentive to them for a dog person Wink

cozietoesie · 03/09/2014 19:11

Isn't she though? Smile

soremummy · 03/09/2014 22:04

I am laughing my head off I'm not a cat person they chose me unfortunately but my longhaired minature dachshunds are always gonna be my favourites. Dd has loads of allergies including to the dogs but hey they are old and where here before her she can't even fed them without me resorting to piriton 5 mins after her being near them! And as for hubbie I would divorce him if we had a cat he is really allergic sneezing all the time.

Ok I seriously love big fat ginger but I'm not gonna have her???? I just can't But even friends tease me cos cats both adore me and I admit to buying them milk etc when they first got them and sneaked into house to give it to them they always come to me when I go in and now the male has found out where I live lol it's only 6 houses away but he was sitting on doorstep today meowing at me (the parents don't know) and I daren't tell them he has 2 homes lol but I'm hoping they keep big fat ginger just for my dd ;-) at their house

Forgot to say they are opening their eyes now so will take pictures tomorrow of them I will admit I'm a little scared if mum is hanging about although she lets me pick them up she keeps staring if she could talk it would be "ok give me my babies back" even though she comes on my knee for a cuddle when I see her I'm nervous she will scratch me for picking her babies up You see that proves I'm not a cat person doesn't it?

OP posts:
cozietoesie · 03/09/2014 22:37

Nope. It doesn't.

RubbishMantra · 04/09/2014 01:15

It means you have Cat Empathy! Which means you most certainly are a cat Person! Grin

Welcome to the purry side...

soremummy · 04/09/2014 09:30

Bet you text to check their ok though.

Fuzzymum1 · 05/09/2014 16:12

That's so sad but unfortunately it does happen.

My youngest cat was from a litter of six originally. One was stillborn, one died at 3 days old and the rest thrived. He's now almost 2 and his siblings (apart from one who got hit by a car) are huge healthy things :D
