Constant vomiting and diarrhoea

Hello, my 5 year old lady has had constant vomiting and diarrhoea (sp?) for a while now. She has vomited regularly for a year or so and over the last month regularly had diarrhoea.

Went to the vet this week who gave me Royal Canin Sensitive food to try for a week - but since starting it she seems to be worse. She used the corner of my bedroom last night as a litter tray as well as the bath!

She eats normally - is greedy if anything and isn't particularly active but she never really has been.

I'm worried for her. I'm also wondering whether it may be down to stress as she hates my 2 year old male cat with a passion.

Has anyone experienced this or can anyone offer any advice?

Has the vet given her any tests?

How long has she had it for OP?

It could be a result of so many things it's hardly worth speculating. The vet will want to try to rule them all out one by one until hopefully finding the cause.

In the meantime I would put some more litter trays around.

She has been vomiting regularly (can be daily) for around a year. This is lessened by smaller frequent meals throughout the day. Diarrhoea has been for the last month. She has constant access to water, doesn't often choose to go outside but can if she wants to.

Vet has previously carried out blood tests which were all clear.

Definitely one for the vet then I'm afraid. I am not sure I'd be super worried by the vomiting - some cats apparently do vomit a lot - so long as she's keeping food down.

Vomiting and diarrhoea does sound a bit suspect though. Has the vet checked for blockages?

Not yet. They want me to try the special diet for a week first, we will see how we get on.

Well, so long as you feel pretty confident in your vet then I'd try not to worry (easier said than done, I know) - they will get it figured it out. Hope she feels better soon!

Is the special diet cereal free?

Has she had an FPLi test? Either an in-house snap or sent out to the lab? Faecal sample would also be indicated.
Next I would be doing some ultrasound imaging of the guts.
As TCN says there are lots of possibilities, but diet trials would be after elimination of the majority of causes.

My usual vet is brilliant and has my every faith, but unfortunately he wasn't there when I took her this week. I will try the food and go back to see him when I can.

What is an FLPi test?

Fluffy - no cereals in Royal Canin Sensitivity from what I can see. We were previously feeding Felix.

Have had similar problems with my kitten since brining him home. The vets have sent a stool sample off to analysed but are suspecting giardia. They were just going to leave him off the royal canin sensitivity diet until they results were back but we has to rush him to the vets Friday night as he was bleeding. He's now on a short course of metronidazole whilst we are waiting for the stool results.

I would be pushing for the vets to look into it more seriously. Cats can become dehydrated quickly with diarreah and vomiting.

FPLi feline pancreatic lipase checks for pancreatitis there is emerging evidence the vast majority of intermittently vomity cats may have pancreatitis at a low grade and then sometimes it flares to an acute pancreatitis. In my practice we have had 2 positive cats in the last 24 hours so far more common than we previously thought.

Probably not the place for this debate Lonecatwithkitten but the fPLi test has very poor sensitivity and specificity and I wouldn't use it as sole diagnostic aid for pancreatitis in cats.

She seems better today! I stopped feeding Royal Canin and swapped for Bozita sensitive. Stools seem to be having more form so hoping she's on the mend.

No Kitty, but interesting conversations at BSAVA discussing that we should test more cats as at post mortem 75% of clinical normal cats have signs of pancreatitis.

Oh that is good news, bozitas really good quality too.

Interesting, Lone. Were there any particular reasons for those post mortems eg in relation to age or apparent cause of death?
