My poor cat is still waiting for her treatment. What should i do?

Do you think its acceptable to still be waiting for my cats treatment 5 weeks after she was first seen? I have rang the vets several times and keep getting fobbed off.

Background is our cat has multiple allergies and is waiting on a special individual serum injection to be made by the labs. Meanwhile shes still licking herself raw and its starting to really stress me to see her like this.

I just feel at a loss to help her other than hound the vets and keep asking is this normal for it to take so long and for them to say yes it is.

I think I'd be changing vets, do they want the business?.

Poor cat, it must be driving her mad.

I am assuming this is immunotherapy that has to be ordered from Holland and brought in by specialist courier, held in special customs to ensure special import certificate (SIC) is in place, then dispatched to importer to dispatch to veterinary practice.
We quote a minimum of 4 weeks and can be up to 6 weeks for it to arrive from us getting the SIC and placing the order to it arriving.
Very occasionally we get one sooner, but it's rare.

Well that was seriously useful background from Lone - but how good would it have been if your vet had given you that sort of information themselves? What are they like in other aspects of animal care? It doesn't sound as if they're great communicators and that can be half of a good relationship with anybody.

I had no idea it would be coming form Holland! They just said it had to be made at the labs, not that it would be coming from abroad. Thanks for the info. Makes a bit more sense now but yes it would have been nice for them to explain that to me. We haven't used these vets before as we've just recently moved to the area so im not sure what theyre like in other areas of care. I just cant bare to see her excessively grooming like this. Shes got several big patches of missing fur all over her and her abdomen is completely bare of any fur. Hope the injection hurries up so we can sort her out quickly and make her more comfortable.

Little pink have they not explained that it is not unusual for it to take 6 to 12 months to respond to the injection and in that time you need to use prevention methods depending on source of allergies.
Many of my atopy cat patients wear baby gros or babies t-shirts to reduce the self epilation.

No! They haven't said anything like that to us. I cant see my cat wearing a baby gro though. Think she would have a fit if I tried to put her in one!

It is worth considering it is really effective for these cats.

Can she have antihistamines (or equivalent) in the meantime to ease the itching?

MANZCVS (Medicine of Cats) or CertAVP (Feline Medicine) or Cert Dermatology is what you want to look for. Failing that then look on icatcare.org for a cat friendly practice.
