Kittens born yesterday

My lovely Mittens gave birth yesterday a bit of a shock as thought we had a few more weeks. She had 3, 1 sadly died but other 2 seem to thriving. Mum seems to be doing really well eating and seems very happy. Just wondered if there is anything I should be doing or not doing? Have no experience if this. She is in a bit of a mess backend ( is a Persian Birmin cross so very long hair) Any advice gratefully received.

If her back end looks a bit of a mess she needs to see a vet.

thecatneuterer · 04/08/2014 11:43

Take her, together with the kittens of course. They can't be separated from her at all at this stage.

Blossomflowers · 04/08/2014 12:04

I think she just a needs a little clean up, infection, she has just such long fur, will keep a close I, sure she will not mind me cleaning her, even before kittens ash was not the best @ grooming is being very affectionate.

And I realise I keep going on about this all over MN - but please do get her neutered. The best time to do this would be when the kittens are around 6 weeks old.

Had another kitten last night, is that normal. All seem to be doing well. Anyone suggest what to provide as a nest, she is under a berueax atm but think they should be contained some how. Any suggestions?

I suggest you take her to the vet.

No, it's not normal for her to be in labour this long. You need to get her to a vets immediately otherwise she could hemorrhage to death.

RubbishMantra · 05/08/2014 23:16

Did you take your cat to the vet Blossomflowers? One of the kittens could be stuck in the birth canal. Not good for mum-cat or any unborn kittens.

Blossomflowers · 06/08/2014 10:02

I spoke with the vet, she now has 4 healthy kittens born over 2 days, vet said could be 2 different fathers. She is fine, eating well, extremely pleased with herself, backend looks clean. Proving to be an extremely good mother.

Did you give her the wherewithal to make a nest for the kits? (A big cardboard box with the sides cut down a bit and a washable blanket or something inside, say.)

Fluffycloudland77 · 06/08/2014 13:08

That's good news. Little strumpet though! Two fathers.

Will you be keeping any of them?.

cozietoesie · 06/08/2014 15:22

Two? It could be more!

cozietoesie · 06/08/2014 15:23

Is she to be spayed now, Blossom ?

Blossomflowers · 07/08/2014 11:00

She is happy under the bureaux and keep will keep changing blanket. Will arrange a box later
coz not yet kittens were only few days old
Yes will probably keep one or two, will see.

Ah well - as soon as the kittens start moving around, she'll be glad of it. At least you'll have time to source one and get out the knife to cut it down. Smile

Yes - your vet won't want to spay her until the kits are weaned but be warned. She could get pregnant again very very quickly so if you see signs of her wanting outside, be hard-hearted. (She could be off partying and leaving you with the kittens much sooner than you expect.)

Good luck with them anyway.
