Poor Lionel and his shitty arse.

Poor big orange furry Lionel has had the runs. This has not been pleasant for all concerned, but particularly as he's not been cleaning himself properly since and he has very furry legs and backside generally. I've tried pursuing him around with kitchen towel, but it's basically dried, and my last attempt with a damp cloth resulted in huge scratches and bleeding (me not him!). How do I deal with this? Any advice welcome...

Is his diarrhoea problem still with you?

cozietoesie · 01/07/2014 20:06

(I'm wondering whether your vet practice might, for example, shave him down a bit if the problem is over - a 'clean start' of sorts.)

murasaki · 01/07/2014 20:26

I was wondering about the vet.

he's a bit better, if not entirely right yet (indoor cat, so I have to poop scoop the tray), but getting there. He did try to have a bit of a clean up earlier but gave up in disgust, and frankly I don't blame him. Maybe I'll give him a couple of days and then phone the vet for advice.

How long has the diarrhoea been going on for?

IAmANightOwl · 01/07/2014 20:57

My sympathies are with you in dealing with a cat with diarrhea! Could you perhaps give his shitty fur a trim yourself if its quite long? My cat was awful when she had digestion problems - would end up on the tip of her tail and then all over the house!!! Angry Is it something he gets a lot that you've had diagnosed by the vet? If he is just prone to the odd bout with no medical reason behind it, I always keep some Pro-Kolin+ paste in the house, works a treat when they've just got an upset tummy.

murasaki · 01/07/2014 21:07

It's the first time he's had it - although I do have some pro-kolin left over from the junior cat reacting badly to some antibiotics earlier this year, will try to get some inside him.

The problem is actually getting at his arse. (and even his mouth for the paste...) He doesn't take kindly to it and lashes out. I seem to have been going through kitchen towel and floor wipes like you wouldn't believe.

No advice to offer on the problem, I'm afraid, but delighted to hear that someone else also has an orange, furry Lionel! That's probably outed me, but never mind, it is a great name for a cat!

murasaki · 01/07/2014 21:17

Yay to another Lionel!

MIne is now asleep on the coffee table, but I know that any attempt to approach either end will result in carnage of wineglass/laptop etc, so am loath to try....

Cozie - since Sunday. I realised when he sat on my duvet cover :-(

If you want to attempt again I would suggest a 2 man approach wrapping him up in a huge old towel to keep legs and claws contained! That worked for us x

BetweenDogandWolf · 01/07/2014 21:26

I used to use moist toilet paper (like baby wipes not just damped normal paper) on my late cat. Sadly a frequent job because he was so arthritic in the end he found using a litter tray difficult and couldn't clean himself and long hairedSad . If it was really bad I shut him in the bathroom on a big towel and used a wet cloth to soak the poo off and then dried him. Not a pleasant job for either of us.

murasaki · 01/07/2014 21:30

It be ok if it were the tiny one, as she's much more friendly, but with him it has to be on his terms, and that doesn't include ennforced arse wipery, apparently.

Definitely try wrapping him up in a thick towel, so his legs are all encased and try a two man effort with the paste. I was going to suggest bathing him but he doesn't sound like he would let you get away unscathed with that one....

Lovethesea · 02/07/2014 22:10

Had to wash my cat once when he got covered in fox shit. Locked us both in the bathroom with towels and ran a sink full of warm water ...... He took some time to forgive me but he did look really funny a fraction of his size and there was no way he could've cleaned himself. He wasn't the brightest feline but he did the wall of death a good few times that day round a very tiny bathroom.
