Sore patch at microchip area

My big ginger boy has pretty sensitive skin and often gets itchy patches.
He developed a bald patch (about 10p sized) on his shoulder blade a few weeks ago. The skin is dry/ flaky and discoloured (slightly darker). It doesn't seem to be annoying him and he's not bothering at it.
As it doesn't seem to be clearing up, I've just had a closer look at it and I can feel something just under his skin, about the size of a grain of rice which can be moved around.
Could this be his microchip and if so might it be causing the sore patch?
I'll get him to the vet this week but just wondered if anyone had any experience or suggestions.
Thanks

These patches of irritation between the shoulder blades are actually very common and are often linked to allergies.
