had to take my cat out in cat box today, at aprox 2pm. got about 5 mins from home and bloody box broke and cat escaped. We were 2 roads away from home at this point.
The cat is about a year old and has pretty much always been allowed out. occasionally she has stayed out all night before and always come home the next day.
so, am I worrying unnecessarily? Would you expect a cat to be able to work out how to get home within a five min radius?

She probably ranges as much as that when she goes out - some cats, even females, can go that far and more. She'll likely be cheesed off and maybe a bit disorientated though but you say she's been out all night before? I'd give it a bit longer before you worry.

Thank you, that makes me feel better. I was fairly sure I was worrying needlessly.

Yes, maybe once or twice, she has stayed out all night. on those occasions she has strolled back in at about 10am with out a care in the world!

Did your puss-cat make it home, Bobsleigh?
