Sureflap Catflap

We are getting a new kitten in a month, obviously he won't be allowed out until after he is neutered.

We have a catflap and are thinking of replacing it with a Sureflap, so that big cat can continue to come and go as he pleases. What I'm wondering is - could baby cat follow big cat out of the flap if he's following really closely? I'm worried that the little one may follow him outside, then not be able to get back in whilst we're out.

Does anyone else have a multi cat household where not all of them are allowed access to the microchip flap?

I don't have one (I own an alpha cat, only a suicidal cat would come in my house) but people on here do & have said if another cat is right behind the chipped cat it can get in.

But, my cat showed no inclination to go out before 5 months. I thought he'd be a house cat at one stage. So you should have a bit of time before kitten wants to go out, plus you could seperate the kit from the door so only the adult can get out.

The only problem with the cat flap is that any cat can get out but only microchipped cats can get in, so if he did work out how to get out he wouldn't be able to get in again.

I'm pretty sure you can set it to only let the chipped cat out too, we have one and they are fab. Only have one cat though but no other has ever followed her in and she's run in being chased before... I think the other cat would have to be very close

Oops sorry, random double post!

As far as I know, you can set a Sureflap Dualscan as you described, strawberry, but with the ordinary Sureflap, you'd have to set the manual exit lock. Actually, RubbishMantra, that latter might be the way to go for the few months that the kit has to stay in. At least then you'd be able to supervise exits and non-exits.

Thanks for all the replies. Smile

Looks like I will need to lock cat flap and big cat will have to endure supervised outside time for a few months. Our house is quite open plan, so difficult to keep kitten away from the cat flap. Our big cat isn't a wanderer anyway, so he shouldn't mind too much. Especially with a new playmate.

Hi Rubbish,

We have one of these. You can set it to 'in only' and then big cat will just have to ask to be let out.

We've never had a problem with other cats following our two in possibly because BlackCat would eat them.

We've had to replace the batteries every other day the last week or so, and I was getting a bit annoyed because we've only had it a year. Was going to write to them about it (one of the things that came up when we were researching is that they have really good customer service), but then DP was off one day, and realised that in the nice weather, BlackCat likes to sunbathe on the doorstep - right next to the cat flap. Which does its job and opens to let him in! All you hear is 'click, click' all day, no wonder even Duracell couldn't cope! Blush

cozietoesie · 22/05/2014 14:40

Awww - poor catflap. Working away hard all day, every day.

cozietoesie · 22/05/2014 14:51

PS - if you ever get a spare 5, I think I'd still write to Sureflap and tell them about that. Customer feedback leads to product development and all that - who knows what bright idea it might cause someone to have by the water cooler!

RubbishMantra · 22/05/2014 22:47

Hmm, thanks River,

The Sureflap was to hopefully cut out all the door opening faff, but if I would need to open it anyway to let him out...

Only temporarily - but maybe delay the Sureflap until the kit is ready and chipped of course.
