introducing a kitten to a dog?

Thinking of getting a kitten but already have a dog, ( very passive Jack Russell Terrier)
Has anyone else done this and if so, tips welcome.
I was thinking of keeping the kitten upstairs , with litter tray and tame teenagers for company, with the dog not allowed ( solid barrier at the bottom of the stairs and dog never allowed up)
I've had cats in the past pre dog and know that it would need to be in until all jabs done.

I have 2 large dogs a lab and a boxer cross. I got 2 9 week old kittens 9 days ago. My boys are non aggressive towards cats and are even slightly scared of them so knowing their temprements I just let the kittens out of the cat carrier in the kitchen where the dogs were as soon as we got in and bam introductions done!

Not one hiss, growl or funny look from any of them Smile

It might of helped that the kittens were in a RSPCA foster home for 4 weeks before I got them and they had a large dog.

I have 2 kittens and a JR. Kittens are now 7 months and they all get on fine. The only time I have to be cautious is when JR is eating food or a bone. They all sleep together and play. If anything the JR was quite scared if the kittens to begin with Smile

Thank you the reassurances. The kitten is coming from a neighbour and she has said she would have it back if it isn't working out. My dcs are on study leave at the moment so lots of company for both my jrt and the kitten. Fingers crossed!

I've done it twice, I made sure they were separate when I wasn't there...other than that they were in the same rooms from the start.

The dog got hissed at a few times, but after a few days they went, ah, you're ok after all.
