Expressing cat bladder?

Our poor little cat has had a road accident which has damaged his tail/spine. He is staying at the vets currently, where they are waiting to see if he can wee by himself. If not, then one option is that we may need to "help him express his bladder"...which sounds both difficult and slightly terrifying.
I am just wondering if anyone has had experience of looking after a cat with such a condition.

You tuck the cat under your arm, aim his bottom end at the sink and squeeze gently on his tummy. The vet will teach you how and where to squeeze properly.

I have watched a few videos on line, etc about how to do it. I guess i am just anxious about looking after an animal with extra needs. Right now our family/work life is totally stretching us, and I am worried we may not be able to manage with anything extra on top of what we are already doing.
Do you have a cat who needs this doing? have you found it has led to an increase in kidney/medical probs?

Is the vet thinking there will be permanent damage or is it just a 'wait and see' at the moment?

It wasn't much extra work at all tbh. My cat lived another 7 yrs after his accident and he didn't cost a lot extra in vets bills or anything. No kidney problems for him at all.

He was a grumpy bugger, but I don't think that was because of his accident!

Sorry, I forgot to mention that he was 'de-weed' twice a day and it took a few minutes each time.
