My ginger boy is missing...

He went out last Sunday and hasn't been seem since, it was one of the first times he had been out since we agreed to have him. Long story but briefly he was my brothers cat who for various reasons (relationship breakdown) couldn't keep him.

I kept him in for just over two weeks, which in hindsight was obviously not long enough, but he seemed so settled I was sure he would be o.kay.

He is microchipped and collared, I have contacted the cats protection league for advice, put leaflets through local doors, contacted the local vets, put pictures on fb lost and found pet pages...

Although we hadn't had him for that long i miss him so much and am devastated that this is my fault, my brother is obviously distressed as well Sad

It's an awful feeling.

How far away was he living before?

And did your brother allow him outside/ has he ever lived rough? (I'm wondering about his hunting skills. I know you shouldn't attribute things to colour but I should say that all the ginger toms I've ever known have been great hunters/thieves/scavengers/human manipulators.)

girliefriend · 18/01/2014 21:25

Hi Cozie, I think you commented on the thread I started when we first got him and were introducing him to our other cat.

He lived over 100 miles away before, was allowed outside and has never run away or lived rough. Have no idea what his hunting skills would be like. He likes his food and home comforts so am so shocked that he has gone tbh. My hope is he has found somewhere warm with food and is making the most of it.

If he's a grown cat and was allowed out before, he's likely hunted. (And my experience with gingers is that they're able to cozen table scraps and a warm bed out of the most unlikely people.) It's the not knowing that's difficult though.

You seem to have done most everything. The only other thing I can suggest is to have a word with your postie if you're in when he comes. They tend to see a lot on their beats.

Oh - and are his chip details up to date?

girliefriend · 18/01/2014 21:32

Hi thanks cozie, have put a picture of him on my profile - I know its a long shot but if any of you are local you never know you might see him!!

Yes chip details are up todate, mentioned to postie today who didn't seem that interested tbh Sad

My other cat is currently cuddled up under my arm, I even think he is missing him a bit!!

Maybe not a cat person then. Have you phoned the council refuse dept? If the worst has happened they might have collected him.

Has it rained a lot down there? I've heard it can stop them getting home, washes the scent away I suppose.

girliefriend · 18/01/2014 21:38

Yes has rained non stop most of the week Sad tried to get through to council and was just told they routinely check for chips so hoping thats true.

He may not have seemed interested but he'll have clocked the information - and at least you mentioned it.

He's a lovely boy.

Thanks - according to my brother (who paid £150 for him Shock ) he is half Burmese Hmm Grin

What a beautiful cat. I have a male ginger cat and have a real soft spot for them. (Mine was a ferocious hunter & explorer in his youth). So sorry to hear he is lost, I hope you have some news soon.

girliefriend · 19/01/2014 09:12

Thankyou, its the one week mark today since we last saw him Sad

Have any of your neighbours been away and perhaps locked him in a shed or garage?
I have a ginger and he has gone missing a few times though never for that long. We live on the outskirts of a small village backing on to fields.
Every time he has gone he has ended up in the same place, locked in a barn. A house up the road has an old barn they use as storage. The cat likes a spot in the rafters where he can see out of a window.
I go there first now if he doesn't come home.
Hope he turns up.

So sorry OP, it's the most awful feeling.

My girl went missing for 5 days and I did the whole poster/leaflet thing. You could ask your local RSCPA to put a photo and write up on their Facebook page. I am always sharing missing cats in my area and I can't think of one that hasn't be reunited with their owner.

My girl turned up looking dirty and was smelly, hungry and dehydrated. She had obviously been locked in somewhere.

While I was looking for her I was amazed by the number of people who told me their cats had gone missing for days/weeks and then just turned up. I really hope he comes home soon, you are obviously doing all you can.

girliefriend · 19/01/2014 21:17

Thanks secret and wish, I have been thinking about him all day as was really hoping he would turn up this wend. It's so weird that he can just vanish like this. If he is trapped somewhere am really concerned that every day counts Sad

I can't believe that he would be with someone who wouldn't have contacted me given that he had a collar with my contact details on it.

Will email the rspca now.

My ginger boy went missing for well over a week once, I really thought he was gone forever but he suddenly reappeared after about 11 days - uninjured but thin, filthy & smelling very strongly of asphalt so I thought he might have been stuck in some roadworks/construction site somewhere. I wished he had been able to tell me!

Fingers crossed your boy comes back. I agree keep spreading the word anywhere you can think of, it's always possible he might have slipped his collar and not everyone thinks to check for a microchip
