What is my kitten doing??!

We got a new kitten from the RSPCA a few weeks ago. She's about 15 weeks old now and is a real delight - playful, affectionate and very chatty.

Over the last couple of days she's been behaving very oddly, crawling around the floor on her belly, making low purring/growling noises and sticking her bottom in the air! Is she in season (is that what you call it in cats?). How long will it last? Do we need to do anything, other than keeping her in, obviously, which we are doing anyway?

She's had her two lots of injections at the vets and we will be having her neutered but the vet says she has to be more than 2kg and 5 months old, so that's not going to happen for a few weeks yet.

Advice from experienced cat owners much appreciated, as she's freaking us out a bit tbh!

Sounds like heat to me, thank The Lord she isn't yowling loudly at 2am.

Be really careful about keeping her in, if she escapes (and she will try) she will likely mate.

Why on earth didn't they neuter her? You might me a soppy "let her have just one litter" type for all they know.

Yep - she wants to party. Develop eyes in the back of your head. I wouldn't be too too worried abut her getting pregnant because neutering should take care of that (unless she's hugely advanced) but they can get stupid if they think there's a handsome bit of stuff outside. RTAs etc.

Folks - are girls coming into season earlier these days?

I have a 19 week old female kitten who's doing the same. Isn't the yowling annoying!

Mines continually trying to find a way out too. She's legged it out of the front door twice in the last week and had to be tempted back with treats and she's tried to get of of a tiny crack in windows. Roll on neutering!

You've both got hormonal teenagers.

So do they do boys earlier than girls then?

We got a boy kitten on xmas eve and he's 10 weeks and weighed 2.4lbs when he was desexed on 16 Dec!

We had to wait until crazy cat was 2kg as well but luckily she didn't come into season. She did get turned away from the vets at 1.9kg and I could of cried....one nurse even asked why I was so keen to have her done! So glad we did though!

We neuter all girls in our care, regardless of size/weight, at from 4.5 to 5 months. In some circumstances even at 4 months. We will do boys at the same age too, providing they actually have something we can remove.

Watch out if you have any male visitors, regardless of species, including human, she may well try to encourage them to 'play'.

It will probably will last a week or so and yes be grateful it isn't keeping you awake at night.

Definitely sounds like she's in heat! When koothracat was in heat before she was neutered she took quite a fancy to dh! She repeatedly pushed her bum up against him and wouldn't leave him alone. She didn't do it to me, but it was so funny to watch!

Hi all, she seems to have stopped now so it only lasted a couple of days. It was quite amusing but I'm glad it's done as we couldn't fuss her without her growling and putting her bum in the air!

How often does it happen? Hopefully we'll have had her done before the next time.
