Smell-free litter tray?

franch · 21/11/2013 15:06

We inherited a tray with our cat (adopted him from emigrating friends); it's one of those ones with a roof and an entrance flap.

I like the flap as it contains the smells, but it comes off pretty much every time the cat uses it so we've now just left it off.

Can anyone recommend an enclosed litter tray with a reliable flap? Or an alternative that's as smell-free as possible? Thanks.

(We currently use Catsan with the liners.)

We bought our enclosed litter tray from zooplus. It is the extra large litter box and as a result the flap is larger and seems sturdier.

In terms of smell I am afraid only frequent emptying of the poo and urine will keep the smell away. Clumping litter is good for this. Chicken crumb has often been praised on mn as a eco friendly, cat friendly litter. You can usually get it from most farm supply shops or if like me you don't have one near you, zooplus again. I buy the 40 litre bag of Cat's Best Öko Plus. It is also flushable.
I have the litter tray in the downstairs bathroom so each time I go to the toilet I will check for any poo and wee clumps and flush them down the toilet. I usually do a full litter change every week and a half to two weeks.
HTH.

Thanks both. Unfortunately we don't have a roomy downstairs loo or a cupboard under the stairs! So we do need a good litter tray rather than a new location.

We do scoop the poop daily, and change the whole lot religiously once a week. There's no wee smell, just poo (prior to scooping).

I'll have a look at the zooplus litter box Bedofwool, thanks.

Bedofwool could you link to your litterbox on zooplus? They have several large ones. Thanks!

I find Catsan to not hold smells well.
We use Cats Best clumping. Excellent stuff.

I have had a quick look on zooplus and unfortunately they do not sell the litter tray we use anymore. However something like this might do
Litter box
And
Litter box

Also you don't need a large bathroom. Our litter tray is in the downstairs cloakroom which is tiny. Think only toilet and the smallest sink known to man!!!
The litter tray fits under the sink next to the toilet.

Mine is from zooplus, will look for link in a sec. It has a hinged front section hitch folds back for scooping. I use Tigerino silicon crystal litter which does a good job of absorbing wee & it rarely smells

wonderstuff · 26/11/2013 20:37

I found the pine litter was best for smells.

\link{http://www.zooplus.co.uk/shop/cats/cat_litter_litter_boxes/hooded_litter_box/litter_boxes_filter/146680\this box} with \link{http://www.zooplus.co.uk/shop/cats/cat_litter/tigerino/99821\this litter}

Zooplus are brilliant. You can get c 4% cash back from Quidco & also 5% discount if you pay about £5 for 3 years

TheOneWithTheNicestSmile · 26/11/2013 20:45

The scoop comes with the tray & tucks inside the filter flap on top

It's really neat Smile

Yes Don't use catsan I think it smells worse.
I like worlds best litter personally and a litter tray with hood.

Thanks all. Will check out all of those options shortly.

Bedofwool you'll just have to take my word for it - no floor space in loo.

Thanks for all the litter recommendations. Will a different litter make a difference with poo smells? We don't have a problem with urine odour. I'm reluctant to change from CatSan as I like the "Smart Pack" system (where the tray liner becomes a disposal bag) - my kids do the litter changing and this is nice and easy for them. Will consider it if another brand absorbs poo smells though!

Ok I've ordered this one as it looks a bit nicer than the one we have at the moment ... Hope the door stays on ...

Have started a new thread about litter brands.

Thanks for all the help!
