Need a non-allergenic cat (with fur)

I get asthma when I am around most 'ordinary' cats but we really want to get a cat for the DC. Can any of you advise on which breeds are best? I have heard that white short hair females of some breeds are best, but I want to know just how hypoallergenic they are.

The vast majority of people are allergic to cats saliva not the fur. Siberian Forest cats are suitable for some allergy suffers.

Yes to Siberian Forest Cats. They don't have the allergen which affects about 60% of people (maybe more). They are also gorgeous.
