if you don't have a cat flap

If you don't have a cat flap can you tell me about how it works?

We have two cats, currently keeping them in as they have only been here a fortnight, but they were outdoor cats in their previous home & we are happy for them to go outside.

However, we don't have a cat flap! We have glass patio doors, & I know it is a possibility to put one in there instead but DP isn't keen on that idea. We can't tunnel through the wall apart from at the front of the house, which we aren't keen on, feels wrong to have a cat flap at the front of the house! Or we can put a cat flap in the half height window in the downstairs toilet, about knee height from the ground (DP likes that idea).

Or we don't have one at all - but how does that work? Would be interested in hearing from people who don't have a cat flap about how it works in their cat's life!

I've never had a cat flap (in rented accommodation) cats are quite good at letting you know they want to go out.

Most of the time, when I'm in, I leave my bedroom window open so she comes and goes through there (bungalow) but she will still jump on the window sil of another room and cry to be let in/out.

The only problem I have had was with my previous cat, Charlie. He would refuse to come in if I was going out until he heard the car engine and then he would run to the front door calling me a variety of catty insults because I was going out and he wasn't in the house.

i just open the door when they want to go out and open the door when a furry face appears on the window sill outside and let them back in simples

No cat flap here either. I pretty much do what issy6cats does. Sometimes they curl up on the step though and I can't see them. So if I've not seen any sign for about 2 hours I often go to the door to check.

Again weather pending I also leave a window open. But I'm going to be getting one of those micro chipped cat flaps after Christmas (I would before but I've not even started the shop yet so they'll have to wait until afterwards.)
