I have a pair, male and female brother and sister.

The boy is a bit more distant than the female. Will come up and lick me etc, but won't ever lie on my lap to be stroked. He will also only let you stroke his head on passing for a maximum of 5 seconds before wandering off.

However, he is very protective of dd. When she was sick recently, and woke up during the night crying, he (kitten boy) ran in and sat with her for four consecutive nights.

The female kitten is much more affectionate. She will sit on your lap for a long time, love being touched, will nudge your hand if you're not stroking her, will fall asleep on you etc. But she is very timid. As soon as the buzzer goes or door opens, she shoots off. She hates visitors coming in. In fact, none of my friends/family have even seen her because she hides when they visit.

I've had no problems with spraying etc because the boy was neutered at 4 months old.

I can't tell that either of them are messy. they play with each other, and i've had no destruction to any furniture etc.

I love them both! No idea if a boy or girl would be best. Just get the two.Grin

Yep it's crap.

Independent females you say? The clingy beast hugging my leg for dear life right now is a crazed, separation anxiety female. She sleeps outside my bedroom door in order to try and get in.

I also have a distant female. Distant 95% of the time. Sleeping on my face the other 5%.

I have a boy cat who is an alpha male. Beats the others up. A complete dick. Then he goes soppy and insists on cuddles and sleeping in my armpit.

I always go for boys... I think they're more affectionate Smile

Thank you all for all your advice.

a friend of the family infact had some kittens. so today I went to view them and returned with a lovely chocolate coloured girl. in the end I just based it on her being the friendliest after spending a little time with them.

currently she is all tucked up in a little blanket on dds moon chair. I will take her to the vets next week about vaccinations

seems very settled. ate up all her dinner and has slept on and off in between exploring her new surroundings.

very happy kitty and very happy dc

She sounds lovely. Here's to many, many years of kitty-cuddles. (And if she's anything like mine, much laughter too!)

Great. Eating and sleeping in the open on her first day sounds like a confident kitten. Hope her litter tray use is OK as well.

Smile

PS - you're obliged to put up a photo of her now!

Not yet but that may be site lag. Check you've made it public and saved the changes.

cozietoesie · 25/10/2013 17:21

PS - good news about her tray use. She sounds quite together for a little 'un.

Certainly does - she's lovely!

(I think you're in for a lot of grooming in later years.)

Does it not depend more on the type of cat rather than gender? The most affectionate and with the biggest character cat I ever had was a male tabby. I had two cats after that supposedly brother and sister.A couple of years after I had my DS and the male cat decided to find another home! I still have the female cat she has been more gentle, timid and affectionate. The black male cat could get a bit spiteful sometimes.
