New cat pooing on doormat

We adopted 2 cats on Monday evening. They have settled fine, at ease with us & kids, & were using the litter tray fine (as far as I'm aware - I work & was away for work early Tues - late Thurs). Last night & this morning however one or both of them has had a poo on the doormat ie 2 poos, one assumes the same cat but not sure.

What do we do? I wondered about putting the litter tray on the doormat?

Or - this may be relevant - I gather that you are supposed to have one tray per cat - in their previous home they shared a tray between 3 cats so we were hoping they would continue to share between the two of them, but perhaps not?

I wouldn't put the tray on the doormat.

Cats tend not to like to use a dirty tray, particularly if it's already got poo in it. Was the tray clean when it happened?

Definitely get a 2nd tray

My 2 shared happily for a week and then started using any paper that was on the floor anywhere in the house

2nd tray solved it instantly

Dunno TCN actually as this is as relayed by DH, will find out. Possibly not clean.

17leftfeet but One is so convenient!

But 2 is much more convenient than cleaning poo up off your floor! Grin

Touché!

I'd try with just one tray and keeping it clean for a few days to see if they readjust. I suspect your DH wasn't as speedy with the shit-shovel whilst you were away and one of the cats has got the hump.

If it doesn't work, try 2. We've mostly had 2+ cats at a time here (currently 3) and they've always shared a single tray with no issues (though they mainly go outside now anyway)
