When should you worry about hair balls?

Our cat has been retching quite a bit lately and today she was actually a bit sick. I saw a small hair ball in the sick (sorry!).

She's my first cat so I don't know what's normal or not. Is it just one of those things or should the vet take a look at her?

Is there anything I can give her to stop it? I always worry when she's retching.

Just one of those things, usually. Is she a long haired or short haired cat? And have you started a grooming routine with her ? That can help a lot.

We had a cat who was furball king. Tip from the vet was to occasionally give it tuna in sunflower oil as the oil can smooth the passage of the furball out the other end as it were. We were given oily stuff to feed the cat but he still barfed all the time. He sounded like a seal when he was doing it.
