Mmm sounds like a job for the vet or a groomer, if the coat is very matted and thick...

Karbea · 03/09/2013 18:16

Is the cat happy for you to do that?

Mine go to the vet and are put under general anaesthetic. They'd rip you apart if you came within a mile of them with clippers!

MoaningMingeWhingesAgain · 03/09/2013 18:22

cat tolerates it well without sedation
owner won't take it to vet and is a twat
need help with tools
preferably something i can get from sainsbos

You need a really good quality pair of professional clippers my choice would be Osters or Wahl. Without sedation I would guess it will probably take you around 2 hours. Do not under any circumstances use scissors.

spanky2 · 03/09/2013 18:30

You can buy ones that are just for trimming pets but they look just like dh's clippers Grin .

spanky2 · 03/09/2013 18:31

Cat's skin is very stretchy .

Thanks everyone. No longer on phone Smile
It's my dad's cat. He lives in a hovel, I am 95% sure he is a functioning alcoholic, unopened bills everywhere etc.

Saw his cat today for the first time in a year or so, And my eyes welled up. First thought was to take it to a vet and get it euthanised. But it's not unwell AFAIK and, er, it's not my cat. It looks terrible 2" thick matts bigger than a handful like massive plaques all over, crawling with fleas, thin underneath, proper neglected.

So I did what I could with the crap tools and I'm going back tomorrow with the new clippers. It's always been prone to a few dreadlocks and used to get clipped at vets, stopped needing sedation as it doesn't mind it anymore. Cat now v elderly - approx 16-18yrs and not fit for GA anyway.

I say consent, I started without asking TBH. But tough titty he should be prosecuted IMHO, if I had any faith in the RSPCA I would have reported him but Hmm

Anyone know cheapest place online to get flea treatment while I am here - like frontline type stuff

OP posts:
issey6cats · 03/09/2013 21:09

to get flea stuff i would go into local vets explain emergency need and they should sell you some frontline a small bottle with the spray nozzle is around £15 from my vets and would give the poor cat instant releif the probs with online ordering is waiting for it to be delivered, and if theres a wilkos nearby go in and get thier household flea spray its very good will reduce the fleas in the house,

HansieMom · 04/09/2013 23:08

Could you take the cat? Then it could get fed regularly, never have fleas, get brushed, petted and loved. Your dad obviously could care less about the cat. Such an elderly cat should get to enjoy the good life now.

MoaningMingeWhingesAgain · 04/09/2013 23:19

I can't. I already have a slightly less elderly cat and two dogs here Sad and it lives in the country, I live v near town with lots of traffic, I think it would be a pancake within the week.

Went back today with new clippers but it was hiding. Going to try again at the weekend.
