Does your cat follow you?

My little cat (he's 1) has started to follow me when I leave the house. It began with him just trotting behind me to the end of the road. However, he has now taken to following me all the way to our local newsagents, waiting outside and howling until I reappear.

DP claims that it's because little cat see's me as his mummy cat. I just think that little cat thinks that he's a person and wants to do people things.

I'm convinced that one day I'll turn around at work and he'll be there (little cat, not DP) and be howling at me.

Do other cats do this?!

sorry I have never had a cat so I cant help at all

Mine doesn't follow me (too lazy) but he does wait for me coming home amd appears as soon as the car pulls into the drive.
Before I had a car I got the bus home one night. Got off the bus and there he was sitting on the pavement opposite the bus stop waiting for me (I was slightly freaked out as it was on a dual carriageway). He then trotted along at my heel back to the flat. Anyone passing must have thought I was a mad woman taking my cat for a walk!

Callmedreckly · 29/08/2013 18:51

Mine follows me around the house & watches me on the toilet Hmm & garden. Shes 14 Grin

alistron1 · 29/08/2013 18:54

That's the thing - he trots along behind me and people 'look' at me as if I'm some sort of mad cat woman. Which I'm not, obviously!

Mind you, he did try and get in the car with DP the other day. Maybe he's a gifted and talented cat who needs lots of stimulation?!

Trinity - yes, my cat has attachment issues ;)

Yes to the toilet thing - when I'm on the loo he stands on his back legs next to me and turns my face round with his paw so I'm looking at him!

my cat followed me on a walk of about 2 miles -she got to the point where she didn't know how to get home on her own, so stayed with me whilst making all these bonkers chirruping noises as she was getting so ansty!

wickedwitchNE · 29/08/2013 19:03

This is brilliant!

My cats both follow me around the house obsessively, and will both 'guard' the bedroom/bathroom door if I'm in bed/bath at night. Until DP gets in from work when they retreat downstairs to their respective armchairs. I am tempted to train them to walk me to the bus stop though now Grin

borninastorm · 29/08/2013 19:17

My cat follows me and the kids. She followed them all the way to school and right into the school playground a few years ago.
She's followed us to the pub several times usually sitting across the road until we'd finished (we sat outside) before following us home. But one time she came right up to the pub and sat beside the table. Then she walked home behind us.
Whenever we leave the house and are walking anywhere we have to make sure she's shut in. If we forget we'll suddenly hear her miaow and see her trotting along behind happily.
She's a bit mental really!

Everywhere I go Confused
In the car, to the shop, waits outside the doctors... A woman asked if he was on a lead Grin

mouses · 31/08/2013 00:13

my bew deaf boy has followed me and kids to the park - just 5mins walk away, stayed with us then walked back.

he does the same when i go to the shop, just last week he followed me and the kids to the bus stop. (the bus was on rest break) we got on and waited and he tried to get on too haha, bus driver had to shut doors while he waited.

love him.

AmberLeaf · 31/08/2013 00:22

Years ago I had a cat that did this.

If I went to the corner shop [about 20 mins there and back] he would always come with me and wait outside yowling!

He was odd but lovely. Smile

He also used to wait in the local park for me to walk through on my way home from school and then walk the rest of the way home with me.

meddie · 31/08/2013 09:12

Yep. mine do too.
There latest stunt is sitting in a row while I try to have a bath in peace singing the song of their people until I get out.
I honestly thought that once my kids left home I would be able to wallow in peace. The cats have different ideas about that.

chickydoo · 31/08/2013 09:15

At any point in the day one of my 4 cats is with me.
They follow me everywhere! I have to check the car before I go out.
They have even been known to sit in/on my bag so I can't leave without them..... They are very needy!

aGnotherGnu · 31/08/2013 09:18

One of mine does this. I can tell when he's gone further than he would on his own because he he starts scuttling really fast behind the buggy and looks a bit jumpy. If we're going far I take him back and drop him over the garden wall. And then he jumps back over and follows again, which can go on for some time.

I have tried running away but he just speeds up. I suspect that looks a bit odd; Woman sprinting with toddler and buggy, trying to escape a fluffy brown tabby.

sashh · 31/08/2013 16:22

I had one who would follow me into the shop.

The current one follows me around the house, but only if she is hungry or thinks I'm heading for the fridge.

QOD · 31/08/2013 16:26

Mine used to come to work with me, all the way, across a use road, then sit there, at the doorway of a massive 700 employee building and wait.

If I was going to town at lunch time, if I went out in a group and didnt talk I could do that, if not, I had to stop with him out the front until time was up. He'd then wait to walk me home.

Not everyday but once a week he'd do it.

Once, he didnt walk with me, dh and I went out straight from work, he picked me up, we were back late. No cat in the flat.
Drove to work and whistled and he came running down the path!

LillyNotOfTheValley · 31/08/2013 16:33

One of mine does that. He does not follow us anywhere around the house (way too busy sleeping next to the window), but when we take the shopping bag he knows we are going to run some errands (newspaper, coffee, farmer's market..) in the neighbourhood and trots behind us.

My cat is a hipster that loves his week end walk to the Farmer's market Hmm Grin

Meid · 31/08/2013 17:36

When I was a child we had a cat that would follow us. We would take him for walks this way. He was often with us as we went around the neighbourhood.
He actually came carol singing one December and meowed as we sung.

GetStuffezd · 31/08/2013 19:12

Now that mine go outdoors all day I really miss them trotting round the house after me. Having said that, when I pull in the drive and open the door, Millie has leapt out of the bushes and into the car a couple of times.

DontCallMeBaby · 01/09/2013 18:16

Neither will follow us, but if either of them is in the front garden when we leave the house on foot, they'll stand there and shout until we're out of earshot. One of them did follow us about 200m up the road once, shouting all the way - he finally had enough and hid under a car for two hours, intercepting us on our way back.

There's a cat round here that follows its owner (I assume) and his dog when they go out for a walk. You can just imagine the cat going "Lead? Loooser ..."
