FIL went to his bosses house today with some documents. His boss is on holiday for 3 weeks and asked FIL to take the key from his next door neighbour (a mutual friend) and to leave the documents in the kitchen.

When FIL got their he found a cat. It was yowling and he said it looked very distressed. There was no water in the cats bowl and no food out. FIL called his boss to tell him about the cat because he assumed that whoever was supposed to be watching the cat hadn't turned up. (the neighbour is housebound so wouldn't of been looking after the cat)

His boss said that know one was looking after the cat. He got it two months ago for a girlfriend who then left him. She didn't want the cat and he didn't want one in the first place so he just left it there whilst he went on holiday. He left the cat flap open and assumed that when it got hungry it would leave and not bother coming back. However the cat is a house cat and his boss guess that is why the cat hadn't left yet.
FIL was horrified and told his boss he was taking the cat. His boss said do what you like with it.

The cat is black and white (like Jess the cat off postman pat) it's a female and it doesn't look full grown though it is thin. It has drank a lot of water and FIL fed him some chicken out of a packet that he bought from a local garage on his way home.

The cat is asleep on the sofa cushions. PILs called me around for some advice because they have never owned a pet. However I have only owned dogs so I have no idea either. I have called my vet and they are taking the cat in first thing in the morning.

Could you please give advice on what to do for this cat. FIL is going to go to the supermarket to grab some cat stuff so I am hoping you can give us some advice as to what to get

He'll probably be investigating a 'catcam'.

Smile
cozietoesie · 13/08/2013 07:53

Actually - that was meant to be a joke but now that I think about it I'm not so sure........

Sparklingbrook · 13/08/2013 08:00

Grin cozie

MissStrawberry · 13/08/2013 08:23

This is all lovely but what if he doesn't get to keep her????

Sparklingbrook · 13/08/2013 08:24

Oh no Miss, do you envisage a problem? Sad

MissStrawberry · 13/08/2013 08:33

No, but I don't know that if you can just take a cat from someone and take ownership of her. I know the other man doesn't want it. I am just worried OP's FIL is going to have his heart broken.

MissStrawberry · 13/08/2013 08:34

her, not it.

cozietoesie · 13/08/2013 08:38

They'll be fine. Once he's registered her at the vet and paid for treatment - and with the previous owner's 'do what you like with it' - there ought not to be any question about it.

I do feel, however, that FIL may have some problems working for this guy afterwards. I certainly would.

patienceisvirtuous · 13/08/2013 09:27

The fil doesn't have to say he has her - she obviously went out of the cat flap and never came back ;-)

My two black and white mogs names are Gertie and Peg - love these names :-)

SparkyTGD · 13/08/2013 09:43

Your FIL sounds fab! This is such a sweet story, poor little thing.

This story is so touching on a day when you're feeling jaded!
Didn't I read somewhere that cats respond best to names ending with an 'y' /'ie' sound? So Millie, Sophie, etc. Mind you it doesn't sound like this new little family are going to need any help with their bonding!!
Hope the vets visit went ok. Smile

MissStrawberry · 13/08/2013 12:42

That is a relief! Thanks cozietoesie.

I really hope work is fine for the FIL. Would be outrageous if the boss starts being an arse there.

PiratesLifeForMe · 13/08/2013 13:23

This thread has cheered me right up. The boss is a real arse but your FIL sounds so lovely - that list of goodies he brought back for her was brilliant! Grin she does deserve all the treats!

I think his new 'little baby girl' will have a very happy life now. Am sat at my desk at work feeling a bit soppy & very keen to get home and give my own little girl a fuss!

TheMagicKeyCanFuckOff · 13/08/2013 14:20

This is such a lovely thread.

Susie, for a kitten?
Carrie?
Ruth?
Annabella?
Flossie?

MissStrawberry · 13/08/2013 16:53

I really want to hear what is happening in the household now owned by a black and white kitten Grin.

PiratesLifeForMe · 13/08/2013 18:10

Yes me too, need an update!

I think this thread is the reason my kitten is eating posh gourmet perle tonight instead of her usual felix....must not read heartwarming cat related threads just before going to tescos!

Mrschocolate · 13/08/2013 18:14

Cat update.

FIL took her to the vets today. She had obviously been dehydrated and she could use some fattening up. The vet said that it looks like she hasn't been fed enough for awhile so boss probably wasn't feeding her very well before he went on holiday.
She is about 7 months old but she is a bit small for her age which is probably due to the lack of food.
She hadn't had any vaccinations and she wasn't microchipped though luckily she is also not pregnant.
She had now had her first vaccinations and she is microchipped with FILs address .
Apparently it also looks like he had cut her claws back and he has just hacked at them so some are looking pretty rough but they will sort themselves out with time. She also had a scratch on her belly which is a little bit infected though not much so she has some antibiotics to get rid of it.

They went to petsathome afterwards and they have bought some better litter and a scratching post and some more toys.

AND the cat has a name (drum roll)

Poppy

Oh and Poppy slept in between MIL and FILs heads on their pillows.

cozietoesie · 13/08/2013 18:17

Well done poor little Poppy - and what a complete stinker that boss is.

cozietoesie · 13/08/2013 18:18

Dare I ask - how is MIL taking all this? Smile

lljkk · 13/08/2013 18:20

Awww.... so lovely. Hard to rehome Black+White cats, so glad they took to her. Boss is a prat who deserves to be left without food & water for a week.

crazynanna · 13/08/2013 18:23

Great name......Poppy

I have a Poppy

MIL is quite happy. She woke up early this morning and left FIL asleep with Poppy. When she started reading the paper Poppy came padding down and lay across her lap. MIL then stroked her for 30 mins straight.
