My cat has a lump

My lovely cat is 13 and has a lump kind of on the side of her neck between her ear and shoulder. It's been there for a few months but I wasn't really worried as its not fixed and is very round, I just assumed it was a cyst. It doesn't bother her at all and she's a very young 13 in every way. I have kept an eye on it and a couple of nights ago I thought it seemed slightly bigger so I took her to the vets. I thought they'd say it's a cyst and just drain it but they want to operate and take it off. Does anyone have any experience of this? I'm so worried about her.

Have they offered to aspirate it with a syringe first and send the cells to the lab to get an idea what it is? I always do this and last week aspirate what felt like a horrid nasty lump on an old cat and turned out to be a cyst.

Yes they did but they said there wasn't much point because chances are they won't get enough from it to get a result. I've decided to take her to a different vet tomorrow so maybe they'll do that.
