What do you do with yours?! We have 3 cats and one large bin that it goes in but it stinks. The trays and bin used to be in the garage with the litter tray so the smell wasn't a problem but we've moved house and the litter tray is in the utility room, so every time we use the bin a smell of cat poo wafts through the house.

I'm registering as a childminder at the moment and the litter tray is a nightmare - the trays were in a double cupboard in the old house so we've modified a kitchen unit for the trays to go in the new house but the older cat refuses to use them and just poos on the floor. I need to make it safe and hygienic for small children running around and do not need to be picking poo up off the floor every morning!

Hi, have you tried Cats Best Oko plus cat litter? You can just flush it down the toilet. I don't have any smell. Perhaps its also related to the type of food you are giving?

I normally either empty the entire contents of the litter trays into a liner in my outside bin or, if the litter doesn't really need changing but just has some poo in it, then I take the poo out using a bit of kitchen towel or toilet paper and flush it down the loo. I did read somewhere that people doing that was harming otters somehow, but I can't remember how, and as I don't really think there are many otters in East London I don't worry about it.

As for having poo on your floor, it sounds as if the cats don't like the litter tray. I would provide another one somewhere else that maybe isn't in a cupboard.

I use World's Best clumping, extract the clumps of wee and poo into a biodegradable nappy sack and put in outside bin. I never put them into the inside kitchen bin.

If you don't have an outside bin it would be worth buying a small plastic bin with clip lids (from Homebase etc. plastic storage section) for use outside and put it somewhere that your childminding kids won't go investigating.

Clumping litter and I take out the poos and clumps onto newspaper, make a small parcel, (one double side of broad sheet or four pages worth of tabloid) and in a poly bag. When there are about 4 small parcels, the bag is tied up and goes in the outside bin.

Using newspaper, by the way, does disguise smells from the clumps (as does the clumping litter) and you can use up friends' or relatives' old newspapers - they'll be glad to give them to you - or you can get the free community newspapers via eg a local library or supermarket. The latter seem to be made of extremely good quality paper.

It's small granules so using a litter scoop you can 'hunt for tresure' easily. You don't need to change the litter that often.
Tray with hood and flap is best, though I've removed the flaps as one didn't get on with that.

And if there is s smell issue you can get certain cat foods that reduce odour.

Avoid catsan litter. Smells like a carpark stairwell.

One small extra tip if you're using clumping litter and removing stuff. Avoid those coloured plastic litter scoops with the slits in them that they sell in pet shops and supermarkets. They'll manage poo but they haven't got the strength to deal with pee that may have gone down a little if your litter wasn't deep enough or the cat sat at a strange angle.

I'd get either a metal flour scoop or, alternatively, use a cheap metal gardening trowel. (Available, ready painted from Poundland at......... Yes. You guessed it! ) They have metals sides and will be a lot easier to handle for you.

I use chick crumb and just bag it in nappy sacks and chuck it in the bin.

Chick crumbs flushable, it's just granules of maize.

Thanks for the suggestions. We can't change the food or litter as we have an old boy who is very fussy and neurotic and will only use catsan, so if our young ladies go anywhere near 'his' tray then he will poo on the floor and wee on the rugs. We have 2 trays - one for the old boy and one for the ladies but they quite like using his!
Will try newspaper and small pedal bin and will just have to empty that more often - am trying to avoid putting bin bags out several times a week in anticipation of miserable weather but cannot live with this smell!

When I read threads like this, I am so glad my two cats poo outside, at the end of our garden in a special area I've made just for them. Still have to scoop up the poo every so often, but I often forget and it seems to disappear somehow
