Is it easy to get cat flap into glass?

We are thinking of putting a cat flap in the glass at the back of our house which gives on to the garden.

Which is the best cat flap to fit into glass? Obviously this would need to be done by a glazier - are they reasonably priced?

Glad you asked that - also thinking of doing same once our new kitten arrives in a few weeks!

Do you have small or large panes?

At least a couple of regular posters have had that done - so keep an eye on the thread and if you're in luck, they'll see it and post.

If it's single glazed then it's very easy - you just need someone who can cut glass. If it's double glazed then you will need to replace the pane of glass. This can be done by most double glazing companies. They basically make a new sealed unit with an appropriate sized hole in it, and the price will depend on the size of the pane they need to replace. Any cat flap can be fitted this way. Basically they are just suppling the glass with a standard sized hole.

i have a photo on my profile of my cat flap in a very large double glazed patio door. That cost £350, but as you can see it is a very large pane.

We had a double glazed full length door, so it was toughened glass, which meant that the glass needed to be cut then toughened - if you try the other way apparently it shatters.

We provide our local glazier (they do all sort of glass work) with the cat flap template that came with the catflap (microchip one, which need an additional section as it was going into glass). They made the glass for us and fitted it in a morning. It was pretty painless! I can't remember how much it cost though.
